The Mets stay in New York but travel to the Bronx tonight to start the first game of this year’s Subway Series. The Mets are coming off back to back series wins including two rubber game wins, meaning they got one more in the last week than they had all season. They also get the DH tonight, so finally they have a reliable way to get both Dominic Smith and Pete Alonso on the field at the same time.

Starting for the Mets is Jason Vargas, who is coming off a complete game shutout. He is 2-3 over 10 games and nine starts this season, tossing 45.1 innings with a 3.57 ERA, 4.27 FIP, 1.346 WHIP and 112 ERA+. In his last three starts, he has tossed 21.0 innings with a 0.86 ERA, and in his last 7 starts he has pitched 39.0 innings with a 1.85 ERA. The Mets bats will look to keep their homer streak alive tonight against Masahiro Tanaka, who is 3-5 over 13 starts and 76.1 innings this year, posting a 3.42 ERA, 4.09 FIP, 1.192 WHIP and 130 ERA+. In six games against the Yankees last year, the Mets went 3-3 (2-1 at Yankee Stadium and 1-2 at Citi Field). The Mets own a 49-69 all-time record against the Yankees. The Mets are 24-35 in the Bronx while the Mets are 25-34 in Queens combined between Shea Stadium and Citi Field.

Vargas enters tonight’s game with 15.0 consecutive scoreless innings. His career-best is 17.0 scoreless innings from August 8-18, 2014.  In his last outing against the Giants, Vargas tossed a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts.

Over Todd Frazier’s last four games, he is 6-for-14 with four runs, a double, two homeruns, seven RBI and has a 1.429 OPS. Frazier is batting .282/.363/.466 with 10 extra-base hits, 13 RBI and 11 walks since May 1. After yesterday’s first inning homerun, Frazier is one homerun shy of 200 for his career.
