The New York Mets (65-77) defeated the Philadelphia Phillies (74-68) by a score of 6-4 and won the series at Citi Field.
Pitching
The Mets made a late change and let Corey Oswalt start in place of Jacob deGrom to avoid the latter’s start getting shortened by rain.
In the first, Oswalt gave up a two-run homer to Rhys Hoskins with two outs. He worked around a bases-loaded jam in the second with two outs in the second with a strikeout of Justin Bour. In the third, he had a relatively easy time retiring the side.
Drew Gagnon pitched two scoreless innings of his own while working around a couple of hits. He’ll probably get some more work soon with Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman likely limited the remainder of the season.
Eric Hanhold only faced two batters before Drew Smith came in to pitch. Smith retired the six hitters he faced. His impressive run of success continues.
Seth Lugo pitched a 1-2-3 eighth with a couple of strikeouts. Lugo stayed on for the ninth and retired the first two but gave up a homer to Carlos Santana with two outs. He managed to hang on, though, to win the game.
Offense
Amed Rosario tripled to begin the game. He came home to score on an infield single by Michael Conforto.
The offense was quiet until the fifth inning. Jeff McNeil drove home Dominic Smith to tie the game. Michael Conforto followed with a replay-aided three-run homer.
In the seventh, Brandon Nimmo walked and came around to score on Austin Jackson‘s double.
It was a good day for the Mets youngsters all around. Jeff McNeil went 3-for-4 with a walk. Amed Rosario went 1-for-3 with a walk. Michael Conforto went 2-for-5 with a homer. Brandon Nimmo went 1-for-2 with two walks.
On Deck
The New York Mets will begin a four-game series with the Miami Marlins at Citi Field tomorrow. As of now, Jason Vargas (5-9, 6.75 ERA) is scheduled to start against Marlins right-hander Jeff Brigham (0-1, 9.00 ERA). However, that could change since Jacob deGrom was scratched today. The game will start at 7:10 p.m. and air on SNY.
