The Mets lost to the Giants in extra innings on Sunday night for the third time in the four game series, this time 3-2 in 12 innings. Mets drop to 45-54 on the season despite a strong start from Steven Matz.

Pitching

Steven Matz got the ball for the Mets and was very solid over six innings.

In the first, he gave up a leadoff single but induced a double play to face the minimum. The second was when Matz faced some trouble. He gave up singles to Buster Posey, Zach Green, and Brandon Crawford to give the Giants their first run of the game. Matz struck out Mike Yastrzemski to end the damage there.

Matz bounced back to retire the side in order and struck out Tyler Austin in the process. In the fourth, Posey and Green got to Mat again. Posey doubled as did Green to make it a 2-2 game. Matz to his credit buckled in again and did not allow a hit the rest of the way. He got Crawford to ground out and retired the pitcher Menez to escape further damage.

The fifth began with Donovan Solano reaching on a throwing error by Todd Frazier, which enabled Solano to take second. A ground out by Austin Slater set the Giants up since Solano was on third and it was one-out. Matz settled down again and got Austin to strikeout and got Posey to ground out.

Matz ended his day on a high note by striking out the side in the sixth. He got Kevin Pillar, Green, and Crawford all swinging at strike three. His final line was: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, BB, 6 K.

Justin Wilson got the seventh inning, He retired the side in order with a strikeout. He also got some help from Jeff McNeil on defense. Overall though, he has been solid since returning from his injury.

Seth Lugo came in for Wilson and does what Seth Lugo usually does. He struck out Slater and got Belt to ground out. He did hit Posey with a pitch but managed to get Pillar to ground out to escape the threat.

With extra innings looming, Callaway opted to keep Lugo on for the ninth inning. Lugo rewarded him by retiring the side in order and sending the game to extras.

Edwin Diaz got the tenth inning. He had a breeze of it. He struck out Stephen Vogt and Slater as part of a 1-2-3 inning.

The 11th is when the game looked to be over. Jeurys Familia immediately walked Brandon Belt and Posey to begin the inning. Callaway pulled the trigger quickly and called on Robert Gsellman to get out of the jam. He also rewarded him by getting Alex Dickerson to hit into a double play and got Sandoval to fly out which subsequently ended the inning.

Gsellman gave up a solo walk-off home to Mike Yastrzemski with one out in the 12th.

Offense

The Mets got their first two runs in the second inning courtesy of the long ball. Michael Conforto hit his 18th homer into the McCovey Cove and Amed Rosario homered one batter later to give the Mets a quick 2-0 lead.

Rosario for his part has been very good over the last month and now has a wRC+ hovering around the league average. It’s important to remember he is all of 23 years old and still oozes with potential. He also has an outside shot at reaching the 20 HR plateau (currently has 11).

The only other hits in the game came from J.D. Davis and Todd Frazier. Davis is now hitting .289/.349/.461 on the season. He’s definitely an interesting bat.

Wilson Ramos had another bad game. His slash is down to .262/.339/.387 and has just a 94 wRC+.

On Deck

The Mets have an off day on Monday before they head back to Citi Field on Tuesday to take on the Padres.
