Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.comZack Wheeler is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today before the Mets’ 4:10 ET game against the Giants.

Wheeler has been on the injured list since July 15 and hasn’t pitched since July 7, the last game before the All-Star break. The Mets wanted to get him an extra start before the break to showcase him as a trade piece, but that backfired as the stint has caused Wheeler to miss at least a start.

DiComo noted that the Mets may be considering activating Wheeler sometime early next week, which would allow him to get two starts before the July 31 trade deadline. He is first eligible to come off the IL on Tuesday, when the Mets play the Padres.

Mike Puma of New York Post Tweeted out a picture of Wheeler throwing his bullpen today before the game, confirming DiComo’s report.

If the Mets still want a chance at collecting a decent haul for Wheeler, whose contract expires at the end of this year, they’re going to need him back as soon as possible.
