The New York Mets (28-29) came back tonight with some late inning heroics during their 5-4 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks (28-30).

Pitching

Zack Wheeler pitched seven solid innings, giving up four earned runs on two home runs from Ketel Marte and rookie first-baseman Christian Walker. He struck out nine batters, allowed seven hits, and walked none.

Seth Lugo made his first relief appearance since being placed on the injured list on May 20 with shoulder tendinitis. Lugo pitched a scoreless eighth inning, only allowing a triple that was misplayed Carlos Gomez in center field.

Mickey Callaway decided to stay away from closer Edwin Diaz as he went to Robert Gsellman to secure the save for a 5-4 win.

Offense

Todd Frazier drove in the first run of the game, delivering an RBI single to center field that brought Michael Conforto home.

Second baseman Adeiny Hechavarria served up another clutch hit, doubling in two more runs to extend the lead to 3-0.

With the Mets trailing 4-3  going into the top of the eighth, Frazier got a two-out rally comeback started by dumping a single into left-field.

Hechavarria followed with an opposite field single to right field to have a runners at first and third situation.

J.D. Davis pinch hit for Juan Lagares, and he drove in the tying run on a infield single to make it 4-4.

Carlos Gomez delivered the game’s biggest hit, driving in the go-ahead run with a double down the left field line. There could’ve been more insurance runs on the base-hit, but the Diamondbacks ball boy interfered with the hit, so the ruling was Davis had to go back to third.

The Mets offense had many scoring opportunities, going 4 for 12 with runners in scoring position.
