The New York Mets have announced that they have placed Dominic Smith on the 10-day IL and selected the contract of Aaron Altherr from Triple-A Syracuse. Tim Britton of The Athletic reports that the injury to Smith is a stress reaction in his left foot.

Smith later commented on the matter himself and said he’s felt pain in his foot for close to a week which the MRI he got on Saturday revealed was a stress reaction. He will be getting more tests on Monday to determine the severity of the injury.

The 24-year-old has been playing mostly left field the last month or so and is hitting .278/.352/.506 with 10 home runs and 22 RBI on the year. He has a 0.5 bWAR and 128 OPS+ on the season as well.

Altherr, 28, was claimed by the Mets in May after he was previously DFA’d by the Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants. Between the three teams, he has registered a combined line of .050/.095/.150 with one home run and two RBI. He’s registered a dreadful -0.9 bWAR and -37 OPS+ as well.

The Mets eventually DFA’d him as well and he ended up getting outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse where he was hitting .274/.384/.565 with four home runs and eight RBI in 23 games.
