Manager Terry Collins told Mike Puma of the New York Post that the club is hopeful that third baseman David Wright can resume “limited” baseball activities next week.

Collins said the team won’t know more until seeing Wright this weekend in Los Angeles, when the Mets play the Dodgers, but there is a strong possibility the third baseman will be cleared to begin running and fielding grounders next week.

Wright has spent the last month in Los Angeles undergoing physical therapy and consulting with noted back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins.

It’s important to note that given the gravity and seriousness of Wright’s spinal stenosis, this will be a slow, methodical and patient process. That’s what Wright himself said when he visited the team in San Diego last month.

It prompted the general manager Sandy Alderson to then say he was no longer holding his breath waiting for Wright to return.

Now mind you, this update comes from Terry Collins, not Sandy Alderson, not John Ricco and not from anyone on Dr. Watson’s staff.

We should have more reliable information this weekend from the front office after they speak with doctors and meet with David Wright on Friday.

Also, not to be a Debbie Downer, but you should expect Wright to return no less than a full month from the day he begins baseball activities at working at Port St. Lucie.

Hopefully Collins is right, and if he is this would be the best news we’ve heard on Wright in months. But until I hear something from a more informed and reliable source, I’m going to remain cautiously optimistic.
