Cole Hamels made history this afternoon at Wrigley Field, as the ace of the Philadelphia Phillies rotation no-hit the Chicago Cubs.

The lefty, who has come up in many trade rumors and is likely headed out of Philadelphia in the coming week, showed that his arm is a-okay, shutting down the talented, young position players that comprise the Cubs lineup.

The game ended with a long fly ball out to Odubel Herrera, who seemed to lose track of it, but was able to recover and secure the no-hitter.

Herrera, the Rule 5 draft pick, also made an outstanding catch in the eighth inning to preserve Hamels effort.

Hamels threw 129 pitches in his no-hitter, against a Cubs team that hasn’t been no-hit since Sandy Koufax accomplished the feat in 1965, 7,921 games ago.

The eight year veteran and former World Champion will likely be on the move and this very well may have been one of his last starts in a Phillies uniform. With the no-no under his belt, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro will have more leverage trading the lefty after the performance today.

However, even though us Mets fans detest the Phillies, it’s a feel good story for us, as we are trailing the Cubs in the standings for the second wild card spot.

So congratulations, Mr. Hamels, and thank you for helping the Mets out today.
