As per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, New York Mets’ outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has been nursing a mild strain of his right hip flexor. Up until this announcement, all parties involved had been referring to the injury as a quad issue.
Cespedes, 32, is currently hitting .255 for the season with a .790 OPS, eight home runs, 28 runs batted in, and six doubles.
His 50 strikeouts in 137 at-bats rank as fourth-highest in the National League, but his .281/.342/.500 slash line with runners in scoring position, as well as his .324/.385/.973 slash in May signifies that he’s slowly working out of his early-season funk.
From Tim Healey of Newsday, Mets’ GM Sandy Alderson said Cespedes, “is prepared to be realistic” about possibly spending some time on the disabled list and that he and the team plan on coming to a decision over the next few days.
Also from Alderson, via Healey, “It’s the same lingering injury,” referring to the hip and quad injuries that have plagued Cespedes since he was traded to the Mets at the 2015 trade deadline, and continued to say, “At some point, this can’t continue.”
