yoenis cespedes 2

“He made a meal out of it!”

That famous quote from the classic baseball film “The Natural” was the first thing that came to mind when I watched Yoenis Cespedes crush a solo homer into the third deck of the stands at Citi Field during Thursday’s 4-3 win against the Chicago Cubs.

Ironically, Cespedes declined an invitation to participate in the upcoming Home Run Derby competition in San Diego, but I’m certain that few if any baseballs will measure up to the titanic 466-foot homer we witnessed llast night in the bottom of the sixth inning.

It was Cespedes’ 19th home run of the season and his 36th in 129 games as a Met. As usual, Cespedes was not one for gloating and instead only hoped that Thursday’s offensive performance was the beginning of better days to come for the Mets.

“We’re obviously going through a bit of a slump as a team right now,” Cespedes said. “But that doesn’t mean that we’re not always going to go out there and give the best that we can. Things haven’t been working out for us, but we’re always going to go out there and give it everything we’ve got.”

Cespedes has won the home run derby on two occasions but felt it wouldn’t be wise to participate while he deals with a strained wrist that required a cortisone shot last week.

In case you missed it, here it is for you watch with mouths wide open…. It is the only home run ever hit into the third deck at Citi Field.
