As the Mets’ lone All-Star, Juan Soto provided one of the National League’s three total hits, collecting a single in the 2026 All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park. Batting second, Soto struck out in his first at-bat against Dylan Cease before lining a leadoff single into center field in the fourth inning. He finished 1-for-2 in his seventh career All-Star appearance.

The American League went on to win 4-0, with Cody Bellinger earning MVP honors after driving in two runs. MMO‘s Alexis Farinacci recapped the full game.

The Mets and the rest of the league are off Wednesday. New York begins the second half Thursday night in Philadelphia, where Christian Scott is scheduled to start the opener of a three-game series against the Phillies.

Before Tuesday’s game, Soto spoke about representing the Mets and helping young outfielders A.J. Ewing and Carson Benge adjust to the major leagues. Despite New York entering the break at 40-54 and their postseason chances almost completely gone, Soto said the Mets would continue working hard to compete. “We’re coming out in the second half with our best foot forward,” he told Iván Cruz Díaz of UnchinDpelota.

The Mets selected 20 players in the 2026 MLB Draft. Their class was headlined by Arkansas right-hander Carson Wiggins, whom they selected with the 27th overall pick. Wiggins underwent internal-brace elbow surgery and did not pitch for Arkansas this season, but he reached 102 mph before the procedure and was healthy enough to participate in the draft combine.

Wiggins officially announced his signing with New York on Tuesday as well.

Rays third baseman Junior Caminero left the All-Star Game after being hit on the left hand by a pitch. X-rays did not reveal a fracture, according to reports (including one from Bob Nightengale of USA Today) but he may still need additional tests when he returns to Tampa.

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association continued exchanging public criticism over the possibility of a salary cap. MLBPA interim executive director Bruce Meyer criticized the league’s “Level the Field” campaign, arguing that owners are attempting to portray a thriving sport as financially broken. “Any of us who watch baseball … are seeing ads not so much for the All-Star Game, not promoting the game, not promoting the players, [but] promoting the league’s desire for a salary cap,” Meyer said (via ESPN‘s Jesse Rogers and Jorge Castillo)

The Mets did not play a regular-season game because of the All-Star break, but as the best team in baseball, they were well represented at the Astrodome. Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez and Darryl Strawberry were voted into the National League’s starting lineup, and Dwight Gooden started on the mound. Fernandez was also chosen for the pitching staff, giving the Mets an MLB-high five representatives.

Gooden surrendered a two-run homer to Detroit’s Lou Whitaker in the second inning and a solo shot to Boston’s Jim Rice in the third. Those three runs proved enough for the American League in a 3-2 victory.

Fernandez shined the most. Entering in the eighth, he struck out Don Mattingly, Cal Ripken Jr. and Jesse Barfield in order. Carter, Hernandez and Strawberry combined for one hit and two walks.

Rounds 5-20 of the MLB draft were held Sunday in Philadelphia and we were on it. Of the 16 Mets selections on Day 2 of the draft, 10 were college pitchers, led by RHP Luke McNeillie out of the University of Florida in Round 5. New York also grabbed two college outfielders, a shortstop and a catcher. From the high school ranks, the Mets selected a catcher in Round 13 and an outfielder in Round 18.

MLB.com staff wrote up a roundup of the “most intriguing” Day 2 picks and the only Met selection mentioned was catcher Jacob Madrid, taken from Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) High School, the alma mater of Giancarlo Stanton and Hunter Greene.

“Madrid is one of the best defensive catchers in the class,” the MLB.com article read. “Not only does the Oregon commit have excellent arm strength, but he also has a quick trigger and ample accuracy. He won’t have to hit much to be a big leaguer, and he’s been able to tap into his natural power from the right side at times.”

After the draft, the Mets signed two more college pitchers as undrafted free agents. New York inked RHP Sam Carlisle of Western Michigan University, per the school. Jacob Rudner of Baseball America reported that the Mets also signed Boston College LHP A.J. Colarusso.

Great seasons seem to have signature wins and poor ones come with defining losses. The Mets lost 3-2 to the Red Sox in 10 innings Sunday to finish the first half at 40-57. New York led 2-0 in the ninth inning when Francisco Lindor booted a potential game-ending double play ball. The Red Sox made the most of their new life, scoring twice off Devin Williams to tie it and winning it in the 10th with a sacrifice fly off Brooks Raley.

Lindor’s error cost rookie Zach Thornton his first career win. He tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks. He struck out five. The gaffe also overshadowed Lindor’s own great day at the plate: He went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and an RBI double. Read James Villani’s game recap here.

The Mets start the second half on Thursday in Philadelphia.

Triple-A Syracuse 1B-OF Ryan Clifford walked in his only plate appearance in the MLB All-Star Futures Game, which was won 6-1 by the American League. Rays prospect Nathan Flewelling hit a two-run homer and won MVP.

Marcus Semien went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer in the first game of his rehab assignment for Double-A Binghamton. Also rehabbing, Luis Robert Jr. went 2-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Cristopher Sanchez (11-4, 2.62 ERA) of the Phillies will start the All-Star Game Tuesday for the National League. Toronto’s Dylan Cease (6-4, 2.56 ERA) will start for the American League.

Orioles infielder Blaze Alexander‘s left hand was fractured when he was hit by a pitch by the Royals’ Lucas Erceg. The HBP came after Samuel Basallo homered to put Baltimore ahead 8-2 in the seventh inning. Both benches emptied as Alexander shouted at Erceg, who said after the game that he was was not trying to hit Alexander.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the Mets are set to recall rookie pitcher Zach Thornton to make his third appearance against the Boston Red Sox.

DiComo also noted that Marcus Semien is just about ready to begin a rehab assignment as he makes his way back after straining his left hip flexor, but may wait until after the All-Star break.

Per DiComo as well, the Mets released right-handed relief pitcher Alex Carrillo and outrighted Matt Seelinger to Triple-A Syracuse.

Luis Robert Jr. has not seen the field for the Mets since late April, but he’s attempting to make his way back. In his latest rehab game with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Friday, Robert Jr. looked excellent by reaching base three times including a home run. A.J. Ewing has held down center field nicely in Robert Jr.’s absence, but the former White Sox All-Star has upside the Mets would love to see back on the field.

The Mets (40-55) lost their series opener to the Red Sox (44-48) 6-2. Nolan McLean pitched well, working around two unearned runs, while Brett Baty continued his hitting streak with a home run. Sloppy defense and poor bullpen performances doomed the Mets, however.

The Mets have DFA’d five players in recent days as they continue their roster churn. Most of them are relievers as the Mets cycle through arms in the bullpen. Dan Hammer was the latest victim before he could even pitch in a big league game to allow Zack Short a roster spot.

Similarly, Nick Kurtz is dealing with a thumb injury that is likely to put him on the injured list and out of contention to play in the All-Star Game.

The White Sox traded infielder Jacob Gonzalez and reliever Brandon Eisert to the Pirates for the 34th pick in Saturday’s draft and reliever Jaden Woods. Gonzalez ranked as the White Sox’s 22nd best prospect, while Eisert has struggled between Triple-A and the majors.

The Cardinals and rookie sensation JJ Wetherholt agreed to a contract extension that will buy out multiple years of free agency. It is an eight-year deal worth $112.5 million, and can be worth up to $132 million with incentives.

Kyle Schwarber officially accepted an invitation to participate in the Home Run Derby, joining Bryce Harper as hometown participants. Munetaka Murakami also accepted an invitation to participate in the Home Run Derby.

Will Sammon and Tim Britton from The Athletic report that multiple teams are expected to show interest in Clay Holmes, despite his fractured fibula. As a result, the Mets are reportedly considering offering him a midseason extension, and Holmes has expressed a willingness to remain in New York. Retaining the 33-year-old beyond 2026 could provide much-needed stability to a rotation that has several uncertainties, rather than risking his departure in free agency.

Holmes has already proven that he can perform well in the New York market and would be a valuable addition to a rotation that raises numerous questions moving forward.

The Mets avoided the most embarrassing loss of the season Sunday when Devin Williams struck out Dominic Smith with runners at second and third to secure a 10-9 win after the Braves rallied for six runs in the ninth.

A.J. Ewing and Tyrone Taylor homered, Bo Bichette had three hits and Nolan McLean gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings and struck out five. Juan Soto and Brett Baty had two hits apiece. MMO’s James Villani has more here.

New York (37-53) will try to split the four-game set at 7:15 p.m. ET Monday when Freddy Peralta (5-7, 4.81 ERA) takes on Reynaldo López (4-1, 3.31 ERA). The Mets return home Tuesday to finish the first half with a six-game homestand against the Royals and Red Sox.

Carlos Beltrán is the favorite to manage the Mets in 2027, per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. James Villani has more on Nightengale’s report here. Heartbreaking news. Dodgers catcher Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. learned of a family tragedy just hours before his MLB debut on Sunday. His stepmother, Patricia, and 16-year-old sister, Eliana, were found dead due to the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. He is the son of retired MLB catcher Eliézer Alfonzo, who played from 2006-2011.

The elder Alfonzo reportedly obtained heavy machinery to help look for his wife and daughter, who were staying at a hotel when it collapsed while he was away managing a team. The equipment helped find Eliana’s dog, which was alive, and Patricia’s cell phone.

CB Bucknor is one of seven MLB umpires who told MLB they will accept a buyout and retire after the season, per Nightengale. The others are Laz Diaz, Brian O’Nora, Lance Barksdale, Marvin Hudson, Tony Randazzo and Andy Fletcher. The retirements may pave the way for Jen Pawol to become the league’s first full-time female umpire.

Braves lefty Martín Pérez is likely headed to the injured list after being hit on the left forearm by a Soto line drive in Sunday’s game, manager Walt Weiss said. X-rays were negative, but Weiss said he will miss at least his next start.

Byron Buxton left the Twins’ win over the Yankees Sunday after the first inning because he aggravated a hip injury.

1985: The Mets and Braves engaged in “The Rick Camp Game,” an insane 19-inning affair that included two rain delays, a Keith Hernandez cycle and several blown leads. The craziest part of the game came in the bottom of the 18th when Rick Camp, a pitcher with a 0.60 career batting average, came to bat because the Braves had no position players left. Camp wound up hitting a home run, the first of his career, to tie the game 11-11. The Mets wound up winning 16-13 in 19 innings.

1986: The 1986 Mets defeated the Astros 2-1 on this date 40 years ago. Dwight Gooden tossed a gem, allowing just one run in a complete game, while Nolan Ryan started for the Astros and gave up a run in five innings. Keith Hernandez and Lenny Dykstra had the two RBIs for New York.

Dedniel Núñez tossed a scoreless inning in his rehab appearance for Double-A Binghamton as he returns from Tommy John surgery.

The Mets selected left-handed reliever Jefry Yan adding him to the 40-man roster and optioned him to Triple-A. Yan had thrown as hard as 100.6 miles per hour.

On Wednesday, the MLB announced the participants in this year’s Future Games during All-Star weekend in Philadelphia, including Mets first base prospect Ryan Clifford. Despite an underwhelming slash line for the 22-year-old in 2026, the Mets’ second-ranked prospect on MLB.com holds some of the best raw power metrics in Triple-A this season. Clifford will be able to show off that power on the big stage and hopefully gain some momentum for the rest of his season in Triple-A Syracuse.

The MLB Futures Game will be held at Citizens Bank Park on July 12th at noon ET.
