On Monday night, Will Sammon of The Athletic reported that the Mets were calling up their No. 2-ranked prospect A.J. Ewing.

The move comes after the well documented struggles and injuries of the Mets, currently holding the worst record in all of Major League Baseball. With Luis Robert Jr. out, the Mets are in need of consistent center field play, and this move looks to pair that with a youth movement.

Ewing has been tearing the cover off of the ball so far this season across two levels. The 21-year-old is slashing .339/.447/.514 with 13 extra base hits, 11 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. His patient approach mixed with elite speed should help the Mets get more traffic on the base paths, and a paring with Carson Benge in the outfield will provide defensive consistency.

• Jorge Polanco has “some good days, some other days when it’s not as good,” the manager said. Polanco is on the injured list with two issues and Mendoza said the 32-year-old infielder’s wrist “is in a good place,” but he is still dealing with Achilles bursitis. He performed baseball activities on Saturday.
• Luis Robert Jr., who went on the injured list with lumbar spine disc herniation on April 30, has not started baseball activities. Mendoza said “we don’t know” when asked if the injury will sideline him long term.
• Kodai Senga (lumbar spine inflammation) was scheduled for a bullpen session on Sunday.
• A.J. Minter (hip) threw a bullpen Saturday, felt fine and will throw a couple more before he sees game action.

MLB Trade Rumors reported that the Mets signed RHP Xzavion Curry to a minor-league deal, according to his MLB transaction tracker. The 27-year-old appeared in three games for the Marlins last year and started this season in an independent Mexican League (4.87 ERA, 20 1/3 innings). In 2024, he pitched to a 4.64 ERA over 42 2/3 innings combined between the Guardians and Marlins.

The Atlanta Braves on Saturday announced the passing of their former manager, the legendary Bobby Cox. Cox is known for being one of the greatest MLB managers to ever do it. He led the Braves to 14 straight divisional titles, five National League Championship titles and was the manager of the 1995 World Series champion Braves.

Per Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Cleveland Guardians are acquiring two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants. In the trade, the Guardians are sending left-handed pitcher Matt Wilkinson to the Giants, along with giving them their No. 29 pick in this year’s (2026) MLB Draft.

The San Francisco Giants also announced a number of roster transactions on Saturday, including that right-handed pitcher Logan Webb was placed on the 15-day injured list with right knee bursitis retroactive to May 6.

The Los Angeles Dodgers activated left-handed pitcher Blake Snell from the injured list and placed right-handed pitcher Brock Stewart on the injured list with a bone spur in his left foot.

The Tampa Bay Rays selected right-handed pitcher Aaron Brooks from Triple-A Durham and optioned right-handed pitcher Mason Englert to Durham. Brooks will wear No. 56. To make room on their 40-man roster, outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy was designated for assignment.

“I was just trying to put together some good at-bats,” Vientos told SNY. “I know when I’m on and I feel good that I’m a game changer, especially with the bat, and I got the job done today and I’m glad we got this win.”

Vientos is 7-for-22 with two homers, three doubles, two walks and seven strikeouts in his last six games.

The Mets head to Colorado, where the potential for bad weather prompted the Rockies to move up the start time of Monday’s game to 5:40 p.m. ET. RHP Tomoyuki Sugano (3-1, 2.84 ERA) goes for Colorado. The Mets have not announced a starting pitcher, but Carlos Mendoza said they are likely to go with an opener. The game will air on SNY.

The New York Mets announced that they have come to an agreement with Luis Torrens on a two-year extension for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. And they did so on his birthday. Per Will Sammon of The Athletic, the deal is for $11.5 million through the 2028 season and includes $2 million in incentives, $1 million each in 2027 and 2028 with no options.

Mets prospect and the No. 42 prospect in all of baseball, Jonah Tong, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and retired 16 batters in a row in a great outing for Syracuse. In his outing against Lehigh Valley, he gave up no earned runs (one unearned run) on one hit and two walks while striking out six through six innings of work.

With the Orioles in the Bronx for a series with the Yankees, it marks the first time Pete Alonso has returned to New York since his departure from the Mets this offseason. Prior to Friday’s series opener, Alonso held a 13-minute session with media where he said he never had a final conversation with Steve Cohen or David Stearns before signing with the Orioles. He did, however, speak with Carlos Mendoza and a few former teammates.

The Mets (11-21) defeated the Angels (12-21) 4-3 on Friday night. New York rallied from down 3-0 with Francisco Alvarezand Marcus Semien combining to tie the game before Ronny Mauricio untied it with a mammoth home run, his first of the year. Christian Scott also looked much more comfortable in his second start of the year, allowing three runs (two earned) in five innings with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Early Friday morning, the Mets provided confidence in Carlos Mendoza and David Stearns via MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. Despite the team’s atrocious start to the season, both Mendoza and Stearns appear to be safe for now.

Rehabbing lefty reliever A.J. Minter gave up an unearned run in an inning of work with Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. Recently promoted top prospect A.J. Ewing also had another good game for Syracuse on Friday, going 1-for-1 with two walks, two stolen bases and two runs.

The Mets’ Double-A affiliate, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies released an alternate identity as the Binghamton Bobbers. The name pays homage to the first Dick’s Sporting Goods location, which opened in Binghamton.
