According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, free-agent relief pitcher Andrew Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals are “closing in” on a contract agreement.

A one-time offseason target of the New York Mets, Miller, 33, hit the open market after an injury-filled 2018 campaign (hamstring, knee, shoulder) that saw his stats dip to uncharacteristically low levels.

After pitching to a 1.82 earned-run average from 2013 through 2017 with 469 strikeouts, 84 walks, a 1.96 fielding independent pitching rating, 0.850 WHIP, and a 234 ERA+ rating from 2013 through 2017 (108 appearances, 291.2 innings), Miller had a nightmare season in 2018.

Between the litany of injuries, the left-hander pitched in 37 games (34 innings), posting a 4.34 ERA, 3.51 FIP, 1.382 WHIP, and a 2.81 strikeout-to-walk ratio last year.

Fangraphs has Miller’s estimated value listed as $22 million over two years.
