A series that many of us before this season would have thought was just another series is no longer so. The Mets make their way to Miami Friday night to start an important three-game set.

The Marlins currently hold a 1.5 game lead over the Metropolitans for the second Wild Card spot. Manager, Terry Collins knows that now is the time to right the ship and take some very important games from Miami.

“We’re sitting here right now going into the Marlins and they’re playing very well, we got to go win two,” Collins said. “We’ve got to make up some ground. There’s no doubt it’s going to be a big weekend for us.” (NY Post)

The Mets will have Logan Verrett, Jacob deGrom and Steven Matz representing them on the mound this weekend. They will be opposed by Adam Conley, Jose Fernandez and Jose Urena. The start will be the biggest of Verrett’s season as the team tries to get the series started on a high note.

So far the two teams have played nine games this season and the Mets have come out ahead. With a record of 5-4 against the Miami team, the Mets hope that success continues to find them against the Marlins. A team that almost always gives them trouble.

“They’ve got a very good offensive club,” Collins said. “We’re going to see Jose Fernandez, he’s almost unbeatable at home, that’s no fun. So this is what this time of year brings and that’s when you’re in a pennant race these are big games and big teams against good pitching. That’s why the game is great and fun.”

Game one of the series kicks off tonight at 7:10 ET as the Mets look to gain some ground in the Wild Card standings. Verrett (3-6, 4.21 ERA) will toe the rubber for the team, he will be opposed by Conley (6-5, 3.61 ERA).
