The Binghamton Mets jumped out to an early two to nothing lead after the first two innings, only to see Reading score five unanswered runs and take the rubber match by a 5-2 tally on Sunday night. With the loss, the B-Mets lost three of four in their weekend series at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading.
Mark Cohoon made his 18th start of the 2012 season for the B-Mets, lasting five and two thirds innings. He was charged with all five of Reading’s runs in the game, four of them earned, giving up six hits and striking out a season high seven. Cohoon gave up two home runs in the game, a solo shot in the fourth inning by Darin Ruf and a three run dinger in the fifth inning by Cody Asche. Cohoon suffered his eighth loss of the season in the game.
C.J. Nitkowski came on in relief of Cohoon in the bottom of the sixth inning with one runner on base. Nitkowski walked the first two batters he faced to load the bases before getting Cody Asche to strike out and end the inning. His final line on the night read one third of an inning pitched, no runs on no hits, two walks and one strikeout.
Jeff Kaplan, throwing for the second night in a row, relieved Nitkowski to start the seventh inning. He allowed one hit and no runs, and struck out one in his one inning worth of work. Brad Holt pitched the last frame for the B-Mets, walking one while putting up donuts in the hit and run column as well as the strikeout column.
The Binghamton Mets batters were only able to squeak out two hits in the game against the Phillies pitchers. Allan Dykstra, who went 1-for-3 in the game, had the B-Mets first hit in the top of the first, his single to right field scoring Juan Lagares from third base giving Binghamton their first run of the game as well. Binghamton’s next hit didn’t come until the top of the ninth, an Eric Campbell single to center field. Campbell, who went 1-for-3 in the game, was forced out at third base later in the inning.
The B-Mets second run of the game came without a recorded hit in the second inning. After Francisco Pena and Wilfredo Tovar walked and Juan Lagares was hit by a pitch to load the bases, a wild pitch by Reading starter Brody Colvin with Reese Havens at the plate allowed Francisco Pena to score from third base.
Dustin Martin, who was brought on as a pinch hitter for Francisco Pena in the ninth inning, struck out in his appearance ending his season long hitting streak at ten games.
B-Mets Buzz: Monday is an off day for the B-Mets as they return home in preparation for their four game series against the New Britain Rock Cats, Double A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. Gonzalez Germen, Cory Mazzoni, Darin Gorski, and Greg Peavey make up the current rotation in the four games in three nights set. After going 1-and-3 in Reading, the B-Mets are now eight games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division with 28 games left in the 2012 season.
