After no New York Mets’ players were named an All-Star Game starter, the Mets were awarded a four representatives when the reserves were announced on Sunday evening. Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, Starling Marte, and Edwin Díaz were announced as All-Star Game participants.

Alonso was a finalists for the starting first baseman gig, but lost to possible MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt. Alonso leads the league in RBI with 70 and has the second-most home runs in the National League. This is the Polar Bear’s second All-Star Game appearance.

McNeil is slashing .311/.371/.436 and is arguably having the best season of any second baseman in the National League. Given injuries to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ozzie Albies, it would not be surprising to Jeff start the game. However, only time will tell if that happens. This is McNeil’s second-career All-Star Game

Marte is another Met having a superb season and was the hottest bat in the lineup prior to his injury. Marte is slashing .291/.342/.462 with nine home runs and 40 RBI. He has also been a force in the outfield and on the base paths with 10 stolen bases on the season. It remains to be seen if Marte will be able to play given his groin issue. Nonetheless, good to see him receiving the recognition he deserves. This is Marte’s second-career All-Star Game appearance.

The last of the Mets’ named to the All-Star Game is Edwin Díaz. Likely the easiest decision the voters had to make, Díaz has 18 saves on the season and a sparkling 1.78 ERA. He has struck out 70 batters in only 35 1/3 innings pitched which leads the Major Leagues. Just a terrific season thus far and it has earned him his second-career All-Star Game selection.

Left off the team was Francisco Lindor, Taijuan Walker, and Brandon Nimmo. Each have had very nice seasons thus far. Lindor’s 60 RBI is top five in the Major Leagues. Walker turned in another superb outing Sunday afternoon to lower his ERA to a terrific 2.63 mark. Lastly, Nimmo is slashing an impressive .268/.352/.433. Hopefully, if anyone named to the roster has to withdraw, one of these three will be one of the first named as replacements.

The All-Star Game will take place in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium. It will take place on Tuesday, July 19th at 7:30 P.M. ET on FOX.
