The Mets and Padres continued their three-game series at Citi Field on Tuesday night. Looking to extend their win streak to five games, the Mets sent right-handed pitcher Zac Thornton (3-3, 3.04 ERA, 36 SO) to the mound against the Padres’ left-hander, Robbie Ray (10-7, 3.20 ERA, 117 SO).

Though the scoreline doesn’t reflect it, Thornton pitched a decent outing. However, Fernando Tatis Jr. was the story of the night. He just had Thornton’s number, driving two home runs deep off of him that represented three of the Padres’ five runs scored that helped lead the Padres to a 5-2 win over New York, breaking their four-game win streak.
The Padres’ fourth run was scored on an RBI single by Ty France in the seventh off Jack Weisenberger, and in the eighth, Manny Machado took Dedniel Nunez deep to make it a 5-2 lead.

Zac Thornton vs. Brewers
The Mets had opportunities throughout the night to tie the game or take a lead; however, they went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base as the offense couldn’t produce when they needed to. One of those outs came off the bat of Francisco Lindor, who was inches away from a second-inning grand slam. But there was Tatis again, reaching over the right-field wall to grab Lindor’s fly ball.
The Mets’ two runs came on a solo home run by Luis Torrens in the fifth that made it a two-run game at the time and then a solo home run by Luis Robert Jr. in the eighth that made it a two-run game again after the Mets had been down by three.
After Robert Jr.’s home run in the eighth, the Mets tried to ride the momentum and get things going, but after putting two on in the inning, they again left those runners stranded as the offense froze when it mattered most.
The Mets’ offensive struggles gave way for the Padres to cruise their way to a 5-2 win over New York to tie the series and send it to a Wednesday rubber match.
Player of the Game
Tuesday’s player of the game is Luis Torrens for his two hits on the day, an RBI, and a run scored.
On Deck
The Mets and Padres conclude their series on Wednesday with a matinee game. Michael King (8-8, 3.41 ERA, 124 SO) will take the mound for San Diego against right-handed pitcher Robert Stock (0-2, 6.57 ERA, 13 SO) for the Mets as they look to claim the series win after their win streak was snapped on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 1:10 PM EST.
