Eduardo Rodriguez pitched a career-high 8 1/3 innings and held the Mets hitless until Carson Benge singled with one out in the sixth as Arizona beat the Mets 5-1 Sunday to take two out of three. New York (15-25) scored five runs on 12 hits in the series and finished their road trip at 5-4. “We needed to be better,” Carlos Mendoza said.

“There’s no issues right here,” Juan Soto said of the league’s lowest-ranked offense by OPS (.628). “We’re all professionals. We can handle this stuff. Definitely we’re kind of struggling a little bit right now, but I think it’s going to pass.”
The Mets, who have MLB’s worst record, are off Monday. Freddy Peralta (2-3, 3.12 ERA) will face Jack Flaherty (0-3, 5.56 ERA) when the Mets return to action at Citi Field Tuesday to start a six-game homestand with the Tigers and Yankees.

Mendoza provided a bunch of injury updates before Sunday’s game:
- Jorge Polanco has “some good days, some other days when it’s not as good,” the manager said. Polanco is on the injured list with two issues and Mendoza said the 32-year-old infielder’s wrist “is in a good place,” but he is still dealing with Achilles bursitis. He performed baseball activities on Saturday.
- Luis Robert Jr., who went on the injured list with lumbar spine disc herniation on April 30, has not started baseball activities. Mendoza said “we don’t know” when asked if the injury will sideline him long term.
- Kodai Senga (lumbar spine inflammation) was scheduled for a bullpen session on Sunday.
- A.J. Minter (hip) threw a bullpen Saturday, felt fine and will throw a couple more before he sees game action.
MLB Trade Rumors reported that the Mets signed RHP Xzavion Curry to a minor-league deal, according to his MLB transaction tracker. The 27-year-old appeared in three games for the Marlins last year and started this season in an independent Mexican League (4.87 ERA, 20 1/3 innings). In 2024, he pitched to a 4.64 ERA over 42 2/3 innings combined between the Guardians and Marlins.

Jacob deGrom recorded his 1,900th career strikeout Sunday in the Rangers’ 3-0 win over the Cubs. He became the second-fastest to the milestone by games and innings, accomplishing the feat in his 256th appearance. Randy Johnson did it in 252 appearances and Chris Sale did it in 18 fewer innings, per the Elias Sports Bureau. The 37-year-old deGrom finished with 10 strikeouts over seven innings of three-hit ball.
Mookie Betts is expected to return to the Dodger lineup Monday after missing more than a month with a right oblique strain.
Willson Contreras left the Red Sox game vs. Tampa Bay after he was hit by a Nick Martinez fastball on his right hand. Initial tests on his hand were negative.
The Giants optioned relievers Ryan Walker and Gregory Santos to Triple-A. They called up lefty Sam Hentges, who was on rehab, and RHP Dylan Smith.

1999: Bobby J. Jones faces the Rockies’ Bobby M. Jones at Coors Field, the first time in the 20th century that pitchers with the same name started opposite each other. (A pair of Jack Taylors faced off in 1899.) The Mets’ Jones (eight earned runs in 5 1/3 innings) could not keep up with his fellow Jones (one earned run in five frames). Colorado won 8-5 despite a Benny Agbayani homer.
1988: Tim Teufel‘s three-run double ties the game at 8-8 in the ninth and Kevin McReynolds hits a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th for a 9-8 victory over Houston at the Astrodome.
1972: On the same day that Tom Seaver earns win No. 100 while striking out six Dodgers over eight innings, the Mets acquire Willie Mays from the Giants for pitcher Charlie Williams (of Great Neck South High School) and $50,000. Mays hit the last 14 of his 660 career homers with the Mets.
