1990: The New York Mets aimed to add speed to their lineup by signing free agent Vince Coleman to a four-year contract worth $11.95 million. Although his on-field performance was only average for someone expected to be a standout leadoff hitter, he struggled to maintain his health.
Significant off-field issues, including frequent suspensions, conflicts with staff, legal investigations, and reckless behavior, marked Coleman’s time with the Mets. His tenure came to an end in disgrace after he injured several people by throwing a firecracker into a crowd, leading the team to sever ties with him despite the existing contract. Once a record-setting base stealer, Coleman left New York more notorious for his controversies than his talents and is widely regarded as one of the most disliked players in Mets history.
