Tylor Megill started on the mound for the Mets on Friday night against the Houston Astros at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. The Mets lost 2-1, but he turned in a solid effort.
Megill looked strong through 3 2/3 innings pitched, but sloppy defense gave him the loss. Megill gave up two runs, but none were earned as two throwing errors by J.D. Davis cost the Mets the runs. He allowed just three hits, walked two batters and struck out four.
The first two innings were mostly smooth sailing, as he issued a two-out walk in the first and threw a perfect second. Davis’ first error and a double by Jose Altuve put the Astros on the board.
Megill retired the first two batters in the fourth. But after another two-out walk, David Hensley singled and advanced to second on Davis’ second error. Another single brought in Houston’s second unearned run. He was then pulled for Marcel Renteria, who recorded the final out of the inning.
So far this spring Megill is 0-1 through two games. He has struck out seven over the course of 6 2/3 innings, has an ERA of 0.00 and a WHIP of 1.50. He’s also walked five.
Megill isn’t expected to make the opening rotation, but he should be in a battle with David Peterson for the sixth starter spot. It will be interesting to see how that competition plays out. While neither pitcher currently slots into the five-man rotation, they will almost undoubtedly be called upon at some point in the grueling 162-game season.
