Pete Alonso left after the top of the ninth inning of Wednesday’s 6-2 victory over the Giants after being hit in the elbow by a pitch from Jake McGee during his at-bat.
The X-rays on Alonso’s elbow were negative.
Alonso’s pain wasn’t for nothing. He made his way to first base and stayed in the game to run the bases. After advancing to third on a Michael Conforto single, Alonso scored the tying run on a J.D. Davis sacrifice fly.
As the Mets took the field for the bottom of the frame, Alonso was removed from the game. Dominic Smith moved from left field to first base, while Kevin Pillar entered the game in a double switch to play left field and bat in the number nine spot.
Ironically, Alonso’s replacement, Pillar, was the hero of the afternoon. In the 12th inning, Pillar rocketed a 1-0 pitch off Tyler Chatwood into the left field seats. His three-run home run gave the Mets a 5-2 lead, which proved to be the game-winning RBIs.
