The New York Mets pitching staff continues to succumb to injuries, but a new arm is on the way as well.
That new arm, right-hander Robert Stock, is expected to make his Mets debut on Wednesday night as his new team faces the Milwaukee Brewers in the series finale.
In very limited action, Corey Oswalt has been one of the better pitchers for the Mets this season. Through three appearances (two in relief), he’s compiled a 3.48 ERA in 10.1 innings of work.
Despite his recent success, the righty is headed to the injured list with right knee inflammation. He’s the latest of many Mets pitchers to be sidelined with an injury. And it comes at a difficult time for the Mets, who are utilizing a spot starter in Wednesday’s game.
Taking his place on the active roster is Stock, who made his season debut for the Cubs (and only appearance of 2021 thus far) against these same Mets. It was a rough going for Stock, who allowed 5 runs while walking 6 batters in 4.0 innings.
That was actually the first start of Stock’s major league career- his first 52 outings were all out of the bullpen. On his career, Stock has a 4.66 ERA with a 2-3 record in 67.2 innings. Stock is a hard-thrower, but struggles with his control at times.
Assuming he opens the game for the Mets on Wednesday night, Stock will already become the 14th different Met starting pitcher this season.
Despite setback after setback in the injury department the Mets remain hot, still sitting in first place in the NL East, with a 4.0 game lead over the Washington Nationals.
