Injury woes continue to bite these New York Mets.
Following their thrilling 2-1 come from behind victory in Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader, the Mets announced that infielder Jonathan Villar was placed on the 10-Day Injured List with a right calf strain.
The slugger left Monday’s game with the same injury, and has not played since then. Mets manager Luis Rojas said Villar was again unavailable for Game 1, and the move was made retroactive to Tuesday.
Signed by the Mets to a one-year deal in the offseason to primarily come off the bench, Villar has taken a prominent starting role for much of the season. He’s batting .246/.333/.410 with 6 home runs and 8 stolen bases in 61 games.
To fill Villar’s place on the roster, infielder Travis Blankenhorn was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.
Blankenhorn appears to be in-line receive more at-bats in his second go-around with the Mets. In his first stint in Queens earlier this season, the utilityman had one hit in just eight plate appearances.
Meanwhile in Syracuse, Blackenhorn has been on fire. His slash line of .389/.538/.944 provides some hope that he’ll carve out a more consistent role in the major leagues.
