The Mets had been able to avoid injuries to the bullpen for the most part as the rest of the roster was decimated during the month of May. That came to a screeching halt Monday as Jeurys Familia was placed on the injured list following Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader.

The Mets say Familia’s injury is a hip impingement. Yennsy Diaz, who was the Mets’ 27th man for Saturday’s doubleheader, was recalled to take Familia’s roster spot.

Robert Gsellman was also placed on the IL today with a torn lat muscle. SNY’s Steve Gelbs reported Gsellman will be out six-to-eight weeks.

Familia had largely returned to form this season for the Mets after a disappointing first two years of his contract. Before being placed on the IL, the right-hander had a 3.63 ERA in 22.1 relief innings.

His ERA ballooned from 1.89 on June 13 when Familia allowed four runs to the Padres in an appearance where he threw nearly 40 pitches — more than he’d thrown in one appearance since his rookie year. He followed that outing with a scoreless inning against the Cubs, then he got the final two outs of the seventh inning Sunday, but not before allowing a run on a walk and two hits.

There’s currently no timetable on how long they expect Familia to be out.

Diaz, Familia’s replacement, has 4 1/3 scoreless innings at the major-league level so far this year, 2 1/3 of those coming during Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader. He also has a 3.48 ERA at Triple-A Syracuse through 11 1/3 innings.

The Mets acquired Yennsy Diaz, along with Sean Reid-Foley, in the Steven Matz trade in January.
