Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (1-1) 7, Syracuse (1-1) 5 Box Score

Syracuse collected six hits, including a grand slam from second baseman Jake Hager and an RBI double from C Martin Cervenka in a loss to the Scranton/Wikes-Barre RailRiders. SS Wilfredo Tovar, 28, went 1-3 with a walk. 1B David Thompson, 27, went 1-3 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Jesus Reyes struggled, giving up five runs on three home runs in 5.2 innings. Sam McWilliams, 25, was a bright spot for Syracuse, throwing two perfect innings and striking out three. McWilliams was signed to a Major League contract as a free agent last offseason but is starting the season in Triple A.

Akron (2-0) 4, Binghamton (0-2) 1 Box Score

Binghamton managed only three hits and went 0-6 with runners in scoring position in a loss to the Akron RubberDucks. Second baseman Luis Carpio, 23, was 0-4 with a strikeout. Left fielder Sebastian Elizalde, 29, was one of the only Rumble Ponies with a solid offensive game, going 1-3 with a walk. Will Toffey, 26, also got on base twice and stole second base in the second inning. Toffey would later leave the game after his second HBP.

Colin Holderman, 25, had a good start for Binghamton, allowing two runs in five innings while walking one and striking out six. RHP Thomas McIlraith replaced Holderman and struggled, giving up two runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Asheville (1-1) 6, Brooklyn (1-1) 1 Box Score

Brooklyn collected six hits but also committed three errors, including one apiece by Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio. The Cyclones managed only one extra base hit, a solo homer in the seventh inning by second baseman Luke Ritter. Baty showed off his keen eye at the plate, drawing three walks in his five plate appearances.

Jose Butto, 23, got the start for Brooklyn and struggled, taking the loss and giving up four earned runs. Submariner Josh Hejka replaced Butto and had a nice outing, giving up only one run in 2.1 innings. Bryce Montes de Oca and Andrew Edwards each threw an inning in relief. Montes de Oca didn’t allow any runs while Edwards gave up one in the eighth on an RBI single.

Montes de Oca was making his pro debut after an injury held him out of the 2018 and 2019 seasons, he was drafted in the 9th round in 2018. He was reportedly hitting 98 mph during camp this year.

Jupiter (1-1) 6, St. Lucie (1-1) 5 F/10 Box Score 

St. Lucie collected eight hits and scored five runs despite going 1-18 with runners in scoring position in a loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads. OF Tanner Murphy, 23, had a strong performance, going 2-5 with a strikeout and two doubles. 2020 first round pick Pete Crow-Armstrong, 19, showed off his skills by getting on base five times and stealing a base. He’s tied for the minor league lead with five walks this year.

Mets top prospect Francisco Alvarez didn’t get the start (day game after night game) after four hits in his season debut. He did pinch hit in the 9th inning, and the pitcher wanted no part of him with four straight balls out of the strike zone.

Cam Opp, 25, was making his affiliated ball debut after spending time in Indy ball. After Willy Taveras, 23, pitched a scoreless fourth, Luis Moreno came out of the bullpen and threw three innings of one run ball. Franklin Parra then entered the game in the top of the eighth protecting a two run lead and failed to retire any of the four batters he faced. Dan Goggin replaced Parra and allowed two of his inherited runners to score, surrendering the lead.

The game went to extras and Reyson Santos took the loss after he allowed an unearned run in the tenth. Santos was wild, but also hit 96 mph with his fastball.

As a group, the Mets minor league teams went 3-for-36 with runners in scoring position on Wednesday.
