It’s not just the fans who are pumped up for what lies ahead in the Steve Cohen era. It’s the players, too.
No one could be more excited than Dominic Smith, who was satisfied from watching Cohen’s press conference and getting to speak to him personally.
“For a guy like that to take over the organization, you’re pretty happy about that one,” Smith told the New York Post. “He’s a very impressive person, so you want to do your best to impress him as well.”
Smith believes that Cohen is going to pave the way for the Mets to be a legitimate competitor as soon as this upcoming season begins. While he doesn’t want to speculate how exactly the money will be spent or any specific moves that will be made, he’s confident in the ability of the new ownership to build this team into a winner.
“What Steve can do financially, it definitely puts us in a pretty good position,” Smith said. “I am just happy he is the owner and I look forward to seeing what he’s going to do. He said he is going to make some moves, so we’ll see what happens.”
It’s definitely a different feeling than the players are used to, but they’ll gladly take it and roll with it. The excitement buzzing in Queens right now is something that hasn’t been there in a long time, and it certainly can’t hurt in terms of the players’ motivation and excitement.
“A lot of remarks he said, that makes you excited to be a part of the organization,” Smith said. “It makes you that much more eager to get out there and help the team win. A ton of us are just more determined to getting better this offseason so we can come back next year and help this team be competitive and win.”
Smith is in prime position to be a part of the Mets’ success, as he broke out in 2020 with a .316/.377/.616 line and came in 13th places in NL MVP voting.
“It just speaks to how hard I work off the field and just the time I put into this game and I am definitely excited and super happy for that,” he said. “I worked extremely hard for it for years and this is something that I definitely saw happening eventually and in the near future.”
