Jon Heyman of MLB Network said on their Trade Deadline special that the Mets are likely going to end up holding onto Edwin Diaz and that teams initially in pursuit of the reliever have moved on.
Diaz, 24, has been the subject of trade rumors for about the last week despite the fact that he’s had a brutal 2019 season. In 45 appearances (41 innings), Diaz is 1-6 with a 5.05 ERA, 3.93 FIP, and 1.463 FIP. He has 23 saves this year, but has also blown five. His strikeout rate this season (13.8 K/9) is in line with his career norm (14.1 K/9), though.
The Mets acquired the right-hander from the Seattle Mariners along with Robinson Cano in exchange for Jarred Kelenic, Justin Dunn, Gerson Bautista, Jay Bruce, and Anthony Swarzak.
While the team was hoping to get a similar package for him at the deadline, it appears that deal, unsurprisingly, wasn’t there right now. Diaz still has three years of control after this one and enters arbitration for the first time this offseason.
Diaz’s performance on Tuesday night, in which he allowed the tying run after he walked two guys and hit a batter to blow his fifth save this season, likely didn’t help the Mets case to get a haul for him.
