Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports is reporting that the New York Mets are expected to interview former employee Gary LaRocque for their GM opening.
LaRocque, 65, is currently working as the director of players development for the St. Louis Cardinals and has spent 43 years in professional baseball.
The former Mets’ scouting director worked in the organization from 1998 through 2006 and has been speculated for the Mets GM job numerous times over the last few months.
Bill Madden of New York Daily News made his case for LaRocque with a former Cardinals exec telling him, “The biggest thing Gary brought to the table was organization. He made sure everyone in the organization, from the minor league players, managers, coaches and trainers were all on the same plan…..It’s no accident all these kids who came up to them this year came up ready to perform.”
On Wednesday, it was reported that MLB executive Kim Ng is among the 10-12 GM candidates the Mets are considering, Brewers’ senior adviser Doug Melvin has an interview scheduled and that Blue Jays’ VP of Baseball Operations Ben Cherington will not be among the interviewees.
The Mets GM position opened up in June when Sandy Alderson had to step aside because of health reasons.
