In his last two outings, Addison Reed has been shaky while converting save attempts. Because it is this time of the year, we begin hearing unnamed scouts critiquing players, like Reed, who are on the trade block.

Right on cue, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports an unnamed scout is concerned Terry Collins has overused Reed.

Now, this is concerning for two reasons: (1) the scout is from one of the teams interested in Reed; and (2) there may be some truth to the statement.

Since joining the Mets in 2015, Reed has pitched 141.0 innings, which is the fourth most in baseball over that span. His 47 appearances this year are the most among MLB closers, and his 48.0 innings pitched are second among closers.

Since the All-Star Break, Reed has an uncharacteristically high 3.38 ERA and 1.501 WHIP. Opposing batters are hitting .304/.333/.478.

Lost in this two week blip is the fact Reed still is getting the job done. He has not blown a save since May 27th.

On the season, Reed is 1-2 with a 2.63 ERA, 1.125 WHIP, and a 9.0 K/9.

It’s because of stats like these many teams are interested in Reed at the trade deadline. Even with the doubts of one scout, it’s a robust trade market for top-end relievers. Accordingly, Reed should fetch a good return for the Mets.
