As the trade deadline inches closer, the rumors start to multiply. We have heard rumors of Asdrubal Cabrera to the Red Sox or Indians, Lucas Duda to the Yankees, and Addison Reed to, well, everyone.
Those are not the only tradable Mets, though they seem to be the only ones other teams are interested in. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, there is “not much” interest for Mets veteran outfielders Curtis Granderson or Jay Bruce.
Bruce, 30, has hit .263/.327/.525 with 25 home runs and 65 RBIs in 90 games. His 1.7 WAR and 122 wRC+ are impressive but what is most surprising is his 1.0 UZR and 4 DRS in right field. He is having arguably the best season of his strong career.
Granderson, 36, has hit .220/.332/.448 with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs in 91 games with a 1.2 WAR and 102 wRC+. It was thought he would have more trade value of the two due to his outfield versatility as well as his clubhouse presence.
Neither player is particularly expensive, but Sandy Alderson could choose to include cash in a deal for them to make it sweeter. There is no denying they could help a contending team in need of an outfielder, so don’t be surprised to see Bruce or Granderson popping up in trade rumors soon.
Yoenis Cespedes has a full no-trade clause, Michael Conforto is (or should be) untouchable and Juan Lagares is injured so they will not be traded. In a crowded outfield, impending free agents Granderson and Bruce are the two most likely to be traded. More importantly, it’s a very good idea to trade one of them.
It is imperative the Mets trade one of their outfielders so consistent playing time isn’t as hard to come by, especially when Lagares returns from injury. Obviously they should only trade one of them if a good enough deal is available, but it’s Sandy’s job to swing that good deal.
I find it surprising that teams reportedly aren’t interested in either veteran. They are both great clubhouse guys that provide pop in the lineup and decent defense. They shouldn’t be too expensive, regardless of whether Sandy includes cash in a deal.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the market is seemingly quiet, then at 3:59 PM on July 31st Sandy turns around and makes a great deal for one of them. Stay tuned!
