Right-hander Seth Lugo will make his next rehab start on Friday night for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and lefty Steven Matz will start for the Las Vegas 51s on Saturday night.

Lugo is making his fourth rehab appearance and third start. On May 28, he struck out seven and allowed three runs in six innings for the Rumble Ponies.

Matz returns to the mound after throwing five perfect innings with eight strikeouts for the 51s on May 28. The young lefty will be making his fourth rehab start this year.

General Manager Sandy Alderson spoke to reporters on Monday and said that LHP Steven Matz and RHP Seth Lugo will each get another rehab start before a return to the Major Leagues is considered. They are expected to throw 90 pitches in their final start.

Matz, 26, struck out eight batters in five perfect innings at Triple-A Las Vegas Sunday as he’s working his way back from a flexor strain.

“I’m feeling good,” Matz told Betsy Halfand of Review Journal after his start. “Glad that I got into the fifth inning today. It’s really the first time I got to pitch in the fifth inning since last August, so it was good to get those up-downs and get the work in.”

Matz went 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA and 3.39 FIP in 22 starts last season, striking out 129 batters in 132.1 innings.

Seth Lugo wasn’t exactly perfect in his rehab start for the Double-A Rumble Ponies on Sunday. In 6.0 innings of work, the 27 year-old allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven. A source who was at the game told me Lugo topped out around 89 mph on his fastball and had a hard time locating the strike zone. Considering he is coming back from a partially torn UCL, that dip in velocity and lack of command is alarming.

Finally, Sandy Alderson said that he is “hopeful” Yoenis Cespedes can be activated from the disabled list in seven to ten days. While running the bases in a rehab game with High-A St. Lucie on Friday, Cespedes felt soreness in his right quadriceps and has not played in a game since.

Before landing on the disabled list, Cespedes was hitting .270 with six home runs and 10 RBIs in 18 games.
