The Mets (18-11) defeated the San Diego Padres (13-18) by a score of 6-3 tonight at PETCO Park, and in the process, pulled within a half game of first place behind the Nationals.
Offense:
It was another home run parade for the Amazin’s tonight, as the Mets smacked four big flies over the wall.
Yoenis Cespedes was first in the home run merry-go-round, as though Padres starter James Shields fooled Cespy with a changeup, the big outfielder was able to golf it into the second deck in left field, giving the Mets an early 2-0 lead.
The next home run is a moment that will go down in Mets history and will be seen in highlight reel’s for years to come. None other than Bartolo Colon got a fastball right down the middle and creamed it over the fence in left field for a two-run blast of his own.
Colon trotted around the bases and Mets announcer Gary Cohen was astonished as the Mets dugout cleared in preparation of Big Sexy’s great feat.
The four spot would hold up until the ninth inning, when David Wright and Michael Conforto hit back-to-back home runs to give Mets closer Jeurys Familia a little breathing room for the bottom half of the frame.
Pitching:
The man of the hour Bartolo Colon toed the rubber for the Mets and though his home run overshadowed his pitching tonight, Colon tossed a nice game, the lone blemish coming on a Jon Jay three-run shot in the third inning.
Colon’s final line has him going 6.2 innings, allowing the three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five. Colon improved to 3-1 on the season with his effort tonight.
Jerry Blevins finished off the seventh, before handing the ball off to Addison Reed who pitched a scoreless eighth.
Jeurys Familia notched his ninth save of the year, pitching a clean ninth to seal the win for the Mets.
On deck:
Matt Harvey (2-4, 4.76 ERA) and the Mets will look for the series split tomorrow, with Andrew Cashner (2-2, 4.85 ERA) getting the ball for the Friars. First pitch is scheduled for 4:40 PM.
