Best Start: Steven Matz
While Bartolo Colon’s performance were impressive, both on the mound and obviously at the plate, the kid from Stony Brook shined on the final home game before a long road trip. The AP reported that Matz has a 0.67 ERA over his last four outings, allowing no runs in three of them.
He’s spotting his fastball on the outside against right-handers, then freezing them with the curve. Half of his wins are against Atlanta, but he’s also pitched well against Cleveland (14-13, second place in AL Central) and San Francisco (17-15, first place in NL West). So make your own determination to just how good Matz is and share it below.
Worst Start: Jacob deGrom
DeGrom admitted to a mechanical flaw as the reason he only lasted five against the Padres to open this road trip. From Adam Rubin of ESPN New York:
“I came in and watched some video right after I came out,” deGrom said. “It’s quite a bit lower than what it was last year. Last year my elbow was above my shoulder. This year it’s not even getting close to above it, and my stride is toward the first-base side. I don’t know if you see how far I’m falling off toward first base. There’s some things to work on there.”
It’s saying a lot for deGrom when he has to work after a start that pushed his ERA up to a whopping 1.99. Needless to say, I think deGrom will rebound well against the Dodgers.
Best of the Bullpen: Jerry Blevins
The Mets lefty specialist was lights out in 2015. He pitched in just seven games for a total of 5 innings or 15 outs. He had five holds and an ERA of 0.00. Then he injured and re-injured his forearm and didn’t pitch again until spring training. He was roughed up earlier this year, but in his last seven appearances he’s allowed just one hit. Whether it’s for an inning or just one batter, Blevins has been a beast.
Next Big Thing: Harvey will try to pitch the Mets to a split, but the big series is next week when they head north to LA. Matz vs. Scott Kazmir on Monday is a great showcase of an old Mets prospect against the new.
