The Mets are doing all they can to keep old pals Brandon Nimmo and Jacob deGrom out of the playoffs. New York (73-85) beat the Texas Rangers (78-80), who are battling with the Houston Astros for the NL West title, 7-2 to secure the series win. Marcus Semien hit a tie-breaking homer in the eighth and Brett Baty added a pinch-hit grand slam in the ninth, while Nolan McLean fired seven innings allowing just two runs.

The Mets are “moving toward” hiring former Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey to a role within their front office, per The Athletic’s Will Sammon and as tweeted by MMO. Falvey will not be the Mets general manager but will serve in some capacity, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo.
The Mets claimed LHP Philip Abner off waivers today from the Giants and designated RHP Xzavion Curry for assignment, reports Max Goodman of NJ.com. Abner, 24, has a 6.75 ERA over 18 major league appearance and was Brandon Sproat’s colleague teammate at the University of Florida.
Andy Green was not ready to commit when asked whether Kodai Senga would be a starter or reliever going forward. “I think there’s a real decision point there and it’s not one that we’re ready to make today,” Green said, per the New York Post’s Mike Puma.

The Mets lost to the Cubs 8-2 at Wrigley Field, temporarily denying them of their 100th win. Starter Rick Aguilera pitched six innings of two-run ball, but reliever Doug Sisk allowed five runs in just one inning. Gary Carter hit his 22nd homer, but it wasn’t nearly enough as future Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg had three RBI and Cubs starter Drew Hall went the distance.
