Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes has been placed on paid leave by Major League Baseball pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings stemming from his October 31 arrest for domestic violence.
Reyes, 32, was arrested for allegedly hitting his wife in a Hawaii hotel. He later filed a plea of not guilty to a charge of abuse and was released on $1,000 bail.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred will not decide on possible discipline for Reyes until after the criminal proceedings and an MLB investigation are completed, and also added that “discipline is not dependent on a criminal conviction.”
Earlier today, Jon Heyman reported that the Rockies’ front office “doesn’t relish” the idea of having Reyes at spring training while his domestic abuse case is still active.
Heyman speculated that Reyes and the Rockies were working on an arrangement to prevent him from participating at Rockies spring training. Tonight’s announcement from MLB obviously renders that discussion moot.
