MLB vs Japan All-Star Series
MLB All-Stars 7 – 3 Samurai Japan
Amed Rosario got the day off today with Kike Hernandez getting the start at shortstop instead.
The MLB All-Stars defeated Japan this morning on the power bats of J.T. Realmuto (1-for-4, R, HR, RBI, BB, K) and Yadier Molina (3-for-5, R, HR, 3 RBI, K). In the top of the fourth inning, Realmuto led off the inning with a blast the other way over the right-field fence for his 2nd home run of the series giving the MLB All-Stars a 1-0 lead. Japan would tie it back up in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth inning, with runners on first and second, Whit Merrifield pushed a bunt that was misplayed by the Japanese pitcher allowing the runner from second to score and giving the MLB team a 2-1 advantage. Yadier then stepped up to the plate and launched a three-run home run over the right field wall to extend the lead to 5-1 giving the MLB more enough to eventually win this one 7-3.
Both sides will get the day off tomorrow and will resume play Tuesday morning at 4:30 am Eastern Time.
Arizona Fall League (AFL)
Peoria Javelinas 7 – 4 Surprise Saguaros
Mesa Solar Sox 7 – 2 Salt River Rafters
Scottsdale Scorpions 5 – 3 Glendale Desert Dogs
- PH Peter Alonso: 0-for-4, K, SB(4)
- RHP Matt Blackham: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 K, Hold (2)
The Scorpions staved off elimination from championship contention for at least another day with a victory today and a Salt River loss keeping the elimination number at one. Peter Alonso did not get himself a hit today but did reach first on an error in the bottom of the fourth inning and stole his fourth base of the AFL season. With it, Alonso has now stolen more bases in the last five weeks than he has in his three-year minor league career.
On the pitching side, Matt Blackham was brought into the game in the top of the sixth inning and looked quite good in his two innings of work. While he did make one mistake to Yu Chang that was launched over the right-field wall for a home run, Blackham did strike out three of the six batters he got out with the other three inducing weak ground balls.
