Jo-han, Jo-han, A Pitcher’s Life For Me

Amazing. There is no better word to describe Johan Santana. Talk about a stopper – he’s the only guy in the Mets rotation who can win!  (And have a different handshake for every teammate!)  Now I have been following baseball since 1990, and I’ll admit I have never been a fan of pitching. Never gave it any thought; it was just part of the game. No favorite player of mine has ever been a pitcher. I [...]

Mets At It Again, Take Down “K” Cards

If you watched last night’s game against the Nationals, you may have noticed the K-Cards that a group of fans were hanging as Johan Santana collected his 10 strikeouts. Well, leave it to the Mets to take the fun out of Citi Field once again. David Lennon of Newsday explains: Johan Santana’s 10 strikeouts Friday nearly got three graduate students from Syosset kicked out of Citi Field for posting K cards on the leftfield facade. [...]

Here Come the Men in Black … Galaxy “Pretenders”

I could spend the next 20 minutes writing about the Mets woes and how to fix them … but I won’t. Instead, I’d like to focus on something interesting and fun. As discussed on Wednesday’s telecast, the Mets will no longer be sporting the black “New York” jerseys. From now on, when the team wears black on the road, the uniforms will say “Mets”. The difference between the ones to be worn on the road [...]

You Can’t Win When You’re In Passive Mode

The fears broached in spring training are coming to fruition in the first month of the season. Will the Mets be competitive when spots 2-5 come up in the rotation? The answer this week was a resounding NO. After Johan Santana pitched another one of his signature games last Saturday, it’s been all downhill. Oliver Perez and John Maine are hard-pressed to get through five innings and Mike Pelfrey is not sound. Livan Hernandez was [...]

Manuel To Starters: Swim or Sink?

Following yesterday’s game, Mets manager Jerry Manuel spoke to reporters at his post game presser and said that he will use his current starting pitchers one more time through the rotation. But he also cautioned that if things do not get better, he will make some changes. “It’s not rocket science,” Manuel said.  “If they ain’t pitching, then you’ve got to find somebody who will.” I don’t know what he possibly could do as a manager other [...]

The Shot Heard ‘Round Flushing

There are Hall of Famers and then there are others who put up solid numbers for an entire career. One particular player compiled a 289 career BA and 2715 hits over 22 years. These numbers are not worthy of enshrinement in Cooperstown but he was a solid, consistent player. He was an All-Star and once won the NL Batting crown with a 324 average. As a first baseman, he made only 128 errors in 13,901 [...]

A Little Home Cooking

The Mets are currently on a four game losing streak, and have just been swept by the first place Cardinals. The Mets see themselves a mere two games up in the loss column above the last place Nationals in the NL East. We’re currently watching a group of players who each are putting up solid numbers, but are failing to produce as a team. Last week, the Mets opened Citi Field and christened her with [...]

Are The Mets A Statistical Anomaly?

Some analysts like to size up the Mets every which way to Sunday. Batting with runners on base, in scoring position, in road uniforms, in hot weather… you get the picture. Mention the words heart or worse yet clutch, and get ready for an avalanche of Harvard Law School jargon and Bill James inspired anagrams and formulas. Lets talk about the Mets hitting or lack of it or… What’s going on here, almost everyone in the [...]

Manuel Shakes Up Lineup, Beltran Bats Third, Wright Fifth

Jerry Manuel is fed up with the lack of production from his offense and he has decided to shake things up for this afternoon’s game against the Cardinals. A frustrated Manuel said, ” Things aren’t working right now. I need to give our hottest hitter, Carlos Beltran more at-bats.” Well wake up and smell the coffee Jerry… I’ve only been advocating that Beltran should be batting third for the better part of a year now. [...]
