The Mets have placed starting pitcher Fernando Nieve on the disabled list with a strained right quadricep muscle. Nieve hurt himself while running to first base in Sunday’s game against the Braves, and he pulled up lame. He had to be carted off the field. I’m a little surprised that the Mets opted to replace him with outfielder Cory Sullivan who was promored from AAA-Buffalo. Sullivan was batting .290 with 2 homers and 24 RBIs. […]
The Mets may have just lost Gary Sheffield to the disabled list after he pulled up lame trying to chase down a Yunel Escobar double. Sheffield caught up with the ball, flipped it to Angel Pagan, and grabbed his right leg in pain. After a long injury delay, he was escorted off the field by the trainer and replaced by Jeremy Reed. The Mets will most likely be without Sheffield for a significant amount of […]
Now that we are pretty much at the halfway point of the season, it is time to look and see what is in store for the next half of the season. After 87 games the Mets are 42-45 and 6.5 back in the division and the wild card. Presumably the Mets want to get 88-90 wins to make the playoffs. That means that the Mets will have to go 48-27 in the next few months. […]
The Mets got some good news today on the eve of the All Star break regarding shortstop Jose Reyes and first baseman Carlos Delgado. According to several reports, both Delgado and Reyes worked out before Sunday’s game against the Reds and by all accounts everyone was all smiles. They both participated in agility drills on the field, but then Delgado got his first batting practice swings since undergoing right hip surgery in May. He is expected to […]
If any of you want to catch a glimpse of two of the Mets brightest prospects, I urge you to tune in to ESPN 2 this afternoon at 2:00 PM EST and watch the Futures Game. The New York Mets will have two players participating; pitcher Jenrry Mejia and shortstop Wilmer Flores. Mejia was 4-1 with a 1.97 ERA for St. Lucie, and is 0-3 with a 3.74 ERA since being promoted to Binghamton. Flores is […]
The Mets made a couple of moves today. First, they claimed veteran infielder Angel Berroa off waivers from the Yankees and assigned him to AAA Buffalo. Berroa, the 2003 AL Rookie of the Year, had been designated for assignment by the Yankees on June 24 after hitting just .136 with one double and one RBI in 21 games this season. Also, the Mets assigned Nick Evans to Buffalo this afternoon to create roster space for Jeff Francoeur. Speaking […]
Moments ago in a press conference, Mets general manager Omar Minaya announced that they have traded rightfielder Ryan Church to the Atlanta Braves for rightfielder Jeff Francoeur. It was no secret that Church was on the outs as I have frequently pointed out this season, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise to readers of this blog. It’s interesting to note that Francoeur was in the same kind of situation in Atlanta, and was […]
Outfielder Angel Pagan has been activated from the disabled list. To make room for him, Nick Evans was sent down to Triple-A. Evans was batting .256 with one homer and six RBIs in 43 at-bats. Pagan will start tonight in center field and bat leadoff against the Reds. John Maine, who has been out with a pinched nerve in his shoulder, threw off a mound today and reported no problems. Jerry Manuel said he was pain […]
Atlanta Braves: (6-4; -5) The Atlanta Braves took two of three from the Chicago Cubs before losing the opener in Colorado. They will finish their series with three more in Colorado before the All-Star Break. Pitcher Javier Vasquez will miss his next scheduled start because of a strained lower abdominal muscle. The Braves had two prospects in the Baseball America’s Top 25, including the number 1 overall, Jason Heyward. Florida Marlins: (7-3; -2) The Marlins […]
