Mounting Debt, Falling Revenues, Huge Concerns
Richard Sandomir of the NY Times writes that MLB is growing concerned with the Mets’ mounting debt and falling revenues. But the Mets worry Major League Baseball enough to be seen as a troubled franchise on a short tether. Their $430 million loan on the team is due in 2014. Their $25 million loan from M.L.B. is past due and repayment has been extended. They recently borrowed $40 million from Bank of America. Their valuable network, [...]

MMO Flashback – A Winter’s Tale:The Keith Hernandez Trade and Me
For this edition of MMO Flashback, we take you back to December of 2009 when Stephen Hanks warmed us up with his fascinating tale from the good old day days when he was the force behind New York Sports magazine. Enjoy! Well, my little Metsies, do we all feel better now? Santa Minaya has bought us a belated holiday gift in Jason Bay, may soon sign one of the flying Molina’s, and something tells me [...]

With some help from Adam Rubin, I ranked the current projected NL East starting rotations according to which ones will be the best in 2012 and also 2013. 2012 NL East Projected Rotations Philadelphia Phillies: Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton, Vance Worley Atlanta Braves: Tim Hudson, Jair Jurrjens, Tommy Hanson, Brandon Beachy, Mike Minor Miami Marlins: Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Ricky Nolasco, Anibal Sanchez, Chris Volstad (with Volstad likely to get displaced by an addition — potentially Joe Saunders, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney) Washington Nationals: Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez, Chien-Ming Wang, John [...]

We’ve Seen These So-Called Nice Hauls From Beane Before
Athletic’s GM Billy Beane is getting lots of praise today for the hauls he’s apparently gotten for young pitchers Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez, two pitchers Beane hailed as the part of the sustainable winning run he predicted back in 2007 when he traded his team’s best players at the time; Nick Swisher and Dan Haren. Now five years later, both players are gone and apparently the returns include a handful of players who were prominent on [...]

MMO Top 20 Prospects – #1 Zack Wheeler
Mets RHP Zack Wheeler is more than just the Mets #1 prospect. He is more than the player acquired in the one undeniably fantastic move that Sandy Alderson has pulled off as GM so far. He is more than a very talented, 21-year-old righty with an explosive fastball and a ton of upside. He is the hope for Mets fans, that the future will be here sooner rather than later. If the cash-strapped team known [...]

Morning Grind: Selig Isn’t Doing Right By The Mets, He’s Doing Right By Wilpon
With all the recent revalations of how Selig has aided the Wilpons maintain ownership on countless occasions, I felt this needed to be said: Selig is not helping the Mets; he is simply helping his buddy Fred. The job of the MLB commissioner is to keep everything running smoothly in several areas of the game. His goals are to keep the game both popular and economically sound. That is done is by keeping as many teams as possible competitive [...]

Beltran Signs With Cards, Marquis Goes To Twins
According to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports, former Met Carlos Beltran has signed a two-year deal worth $25 million dollars with the St. Louis Cardinals. Beltran reportedly turned down a couple of three-year offers to join St. Louis for a chance to contend. Last season, Beltran batted .300/.385/.525 in 598 plate appearances for the Mets and Giants, but more importantly stayed healthy all year long. The Twins meanwhile, signed starting pitcher Jason Marquis who the Mets [...]

Nationals Acquire Gio Gonzalez
According to Keith Law of ESPN, the Oakland Athletics will trade LHP Gio Gonzalez to the Washington Nationals for four minor leaguers; right-handers A.J. Cole and Brad Peacock, left-hander Tom Milone and catcher Derek Norris. Three of the players the Nats gave up were on their top-ten prospects list. Gonzalez, 25, will be under team control through the 2015 season and joins what is now a solid, young rotation brimming with talent and upside. Meanwhile, the A’s continue to sell everything but the [...]

Wright Staying Put? I Don’t Think So…
Rockies beat reporter Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, said via Twitter: “My understanding is that the Mets will hold on to David Wright until the Trade Deadline,” I’m not buying it one bit… As I felt and said all through the 2011 season – that the Mets would never re-sign Jose Reyes – I have that same feeling and even more so for David Wright. Wright is owed $15 million this season and the Mets are now [...]

Mets Sign Catcher Rob Johnson
According to Adam Rubin of ESPN via twitter, the Mets have inked catcher Rob Johnson to a minor league deal. The contract is for one year with an invite to Spring Training. This move adds some depth to the extrememly thin Mets catching situation. Johnson will likely be in competition with Mike Nickeas for the backup role to Josh Thole. Although underwhelming with the bat last year (.190/.259/.285), the 28-year old Montana native had a 3.26 [...]
