Update On Mets From Sandy Alderson

Here is an email from Sandy Alderson who updates us on the latest signings, spring training and the 2011 season. With spring training just six weeks away, I wanted to update you on our preparation for the 2011 season. Yesterday, we wrapped up two days of meetings in Port St. Lucie where we went over organizational philosophy and how to implement it throughout the major and minor leagues. It was also the first opportunity for [...]

There’s A Lot More Right With The Mets Than Wrong

Gil Hodges must’ve been crazy! The Mets had just lost 101 games and finished in 10th place, 40 ½ GB of the Cardinals. Yet when Hodges was hired by the Mets in the off-season of 1967 he stated, ‘I see a lot more right with the Mets than wrong.’ Hodges first year as skipper provided us 73 wins, most in team history to date. And we all know what happened the year after. He and [...]

A Dear John Letter To Franco From The BBWAA

Dear John, Having you on our Hall of Fame ballot this year has been a real joy, but unfortunately all good things must come to an end and we have to call it quits. There’s just no point in seeing you again and I thought it was probably best for both of us to move on with our lives. Please don’t feel bad and or beat yourself up over it because you did nothing wrong. It’s [...]

NL East Report – Lunatic Fringe

Braves Second baseman Dan Uggla agreed to a five-year contract that will keep him with the Atlanta Braves through the 2015 season. Atlanta said a long-term deal with the two-time All-Star had been their goal since they acquired him in a trade with Florida in November. A report on MLB’s website said the deal was worth $62 million. Uggla hit .287 with 33 home runs and 105 RBI for the Marlins in 2010, ranking him [...]

Former Met Roberto Alomar And Bert Blyleven Are Heading To Cooperstown

Well, its that time of year again.  Its time to decide who was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Its that time of year where we argue, dispute, and elect those worthy of joining the best of the best, of all baseball players in the Hall of Fame.  The BBWAA announced today (drum roll please….) that they elected Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven to the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Both are joining former GM [...]

Will Mike Piazza Suffer The Same Fate As Jeff Bagwell?

Today is the big day when the new class of Hall of Famers will be announced sometime around 1:00 PM EST. I say Hall of Famers, but my gut tells me only one player will be elected today; Roberto Alomar. Of course Alomar should have gotten in last year, but he fell a few votes short. This time he should get in with a solid majority. Unfortunately, other deserving players like Bert Blyleven, Jeff Bagwell and [...]

Mets Deny Making Offer To Chris Young

According to the NY Post, the Mets remain interested in Chris Young, but the team denied a report last night that it had made the free-agent right-hander an offer. So much for that… Original Post 1/4 7:30 pm Buster Olney of ESPN.com reported via Twitter that the Mets have made an offer to free agent pitcher Chris Young. Heard this: The Mets’ offer to Chris Young likely includes guaranteed money over $1 million. He’s a [...]

Un-Fricking-Believable Records That Have Been Broken

One of the figures who played a primary role in establishing the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York was Ford C. Frick. Frick was baseball’s third commissioner, but is most remembered as the one responsible for ordering an asterisk to be placed next to Roger Maris’ single season home run record. In 1970, he was elected to the Hall of Fame himself, and even had an award named after him which is given annually to one of baseball’s revered broadcasters. Mets [...]

A Make or Break Season For Fernando Martinez

Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus selects Fernando Martinez as one of his “make or break” prospects  for the 2011 season, and I couldn’t agree more.  Martinez has been a must for this list for so long that we should rename it the annual Fernando Martinez list. The amazing thing is that the outfielder is still just 21 years old; what’s troubling is that the nonstop stream of injuries that have affected his development have finally begun [...]

Thoughts On Chris Capuano

Happy New Year everyone. It looks like the Mets made a couple of interesting moves yesterday with the signings of lefthander Chris Capuano and righthander Taylor Buchholz, both of whom can be classified as reclamation projects at this point. To make room for them we designated reliever Ryota Igarashi for assignment. No biggies as I wasn’t exactly thrilled with his performance last season anyway. The one name that I was really happy to see was that of Chris [...]
