So Close… Dickey Rises To The Occasion!

R.A Dickey bounced back from a bad start better than anyone could have imagined. Dickey went all the way on a complete game one-hit shutout. Its was the fifth time this season that the Mets have shut out the Phillies. The only season it happened more was in 1969 (7 times), when the Mets won the World Series. Dickey handed the Phillies without any trouble, with the lone hit coming from the opposing pitcher Cole Hamels. Carlos Beltran drove [...]

NL East Report

Atlanta Braves: (66-48; Leader) The Braves took two of three from the Houston Astros, and will open up a weekend series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mike Minor made his debut against the Astros, going 6 IP with 4 Runs, 3 Earned. The big news out of Atlanta, though, is that we may have seen the last of Larry “Chipper” Jones. Jones, expected to retire after the season, suffered a torn ACL, ending his season. [...]

Jeff Francoeur – Worst Everyday Player?

Joe Posnanski answered a question on his blog a few days back about who is the worst everyday player in baseball for 2010. “A friend and I have a bet – I say Rony Cedeno, he says Chone Figgins. I know Yuni was your choice at one point last year, can you give us an update and settle a bet?” His judgment of “The Worst Everyday Player in Baseball” goes by these qualities… (1) Poor [...]

The Minister Of Defense, Ruben Tejada

Mark Simon who does an amazing job at ESPN New York, sent me an email this morning about his latest post entitled, “A Shout-out to Shutouts“. It’s a great fact-filled piece on the Mets 17 shutouts this season that I encourage all of you to read. One interesting piece of information he throws in at the end of his article is this, Lastly, Ruben Tejada, whose play we wrote about earlier this week, must think that shutouts [...]

Morning Grind: Johan Shutout, Boycott, K-Rod, No Country For Old Men

SHUTOUT The “Ace” Johan Santana pitched a shutout yesterday afternoon against the Rockies in a 4-0 win, giving up 4 hits in his complete game effort. Santana has, most emphatically in this game at least, shown why he is the real closer for this team. Whenever things get off track, the ace is supposed to bring things back into alignment with a quality start. It’s funny how Big Pelf is expected to be a stopper. [...]

Mets Actions Must Fit The Crime

The New York Mets today announced they are taking the following disciplinary action against pitcher Francisco Rodriguez: The team has placed Rodriguez on the restricted list for two days. He will be removed from the roster, will not be with the team, and will not be paid during that time. “Ownership and the organization are very disappointed in Francisco’s inappropriate behavior and we take this matter very seriously,” said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon. ————————————– This [...]

Don’t Mess With The Johan! – Part Two, Mets Shutout Rockies 4-0

The Mets took the rubber game of the series with a 4-0 win over the Rockies thanks to the likes of Johan Santana. Santana pitched a complete game shutout and kept the relievers in the bullpen. Reyes and Beltran both had a multiple game. The Mets get back to .500 on the season. Game Summary Johan Santana pitched an absolute gem today. If you missed it, I really hope you recorded it because this was [...]

How Much More Of This Can We Take?

It’s getting awfully hard to find anymore reasons to justify keeping Jerry Manuel as the manager of the Mets. His inability to identify the critical point late in a game when he should use his closer and best bullpen option Frankie Rodriguez, has resulted in yet another devastating loss. This time, with the Mets hanging on to a razor thin 2-1 lead in the eighth inning and the bases loaded, Manuel decided to let Manny Acosta pitch [...]
