Good Golly, Miss Ollie?

Thomas Kaplan of the NY Times updates us on Oliver Perez who made his third minor league start for Class AAA Buffalo this afternoon. Perez had a rough outing Sunday. He allowed only one unearned run in five innings, but they were five extraordinarily ugly innings: Perez gave up three hits and five walks; hit two batters; and threw two wild pitches. Only 52 of his 100 pitches were strikes, and he also made a throwing [...]

Don’t Mess With The Johan, Mets Beat Braves 3-0

Johan Santana pitched seven shutout innings, and despite only scant run support, the Mets were able to tally 13 hits in a 3-0 win over the Braves. The first half ends in on a winning note for the Mets. Game Notes Johan Santana pitched like the ace that we traded for. Last outing he went nine complete shutout innings and got the win and today he followed that up with seven more shutout innings. Now making it [...]

It’s Not About Getting A Pitcher, It’s About Doing This…

As Major League Baseball moves into its All-Star Break, it’s time to reflect on the Mets and what they need to do to improve the team in the second half.  Whereas many people have been clamoring for another starting pitcher before the trading deadline on July 31, I don’t think that’s the answer.  In fact, I think the team just needs to improve some things internally, things that have nothing or very little to do [...]

The Mets’ Start to a Finish

The Mets at the time of this post will be a games away from the All Star break and five games back of the NL East leading Braves. The focus has been on starting pitching and with the apparent signing of Cliff Lee to the Texas Rangers, the Mets will clearly be looking elsewhere for starting pitching. This decision is a deal-breaker in more ways than one: The Mets have a chance to lock up their division and [...]

You Play With Fire And You Get Burned

Jose Reyes was removed from todays game in the the top of the seventh inning after he re-aggravated his oblique injury while fielding a Troy Glaus grounder and throwing it to first base. Following the play, Reyes was visibly in pain and was limping around the infield before being removed and replaced by Ruben Tejada by manager Jerry Manuel. Reyes first suffered the injury on June 30 against the Marlins and after missing a few games, he convinced the Mets [...]

Braves Knock Out Pelfrey and Shutout Mets 4-0

The Mets bats were futile against Tim Hudson while the Braves roughed up Mike Pelfrey for a dozen hits to beat the Mets 4-0. It was the second straight loss to the Braves for the Mets who fade even further away from first place in the NL East. Game Notes Mike Pelfrey got majorly beat up today by the Bravos in the hits column. He was leaving his pitches all over the strike zone for the Braves to have [...]

Getting Some Closure On Cliff Lee

As we wrap up a hectic week of Cliff Lee posts on MMO, it’s only fitting to put some closure on the matter from the perspective of where the Mets stood, what the Mariners wanted, and how far the Mets were willing to go. To begin, according to reports in both the Daily News and the NY Post, the Seattle Mariners wanted Ike Davis in any deal for Cliff Lee, a price that was too [...]

All Our LeBron’s Have Left Too

I really feel for the Cleveland Cavalier fans today.  Their Franchise has scorned them and moved on to a bigger and brighter stage.  Cleveland fans who really have had nothing but heartbreak for as long as I’ve been alive (39 years) have suffered the ultimate blow.  I thought last year was rough when C.C. Sabathia was pitching against Cliff Lee in the World Series.  And you know what??  It was bad.  It was awful.  But [...]

Mike Pelfrey Has A Dead Arm

Despite the loss yesterday, I thought R.A. Dickey pitched well and simply threw a couple of knucklers that simply hung over the fat part of the plate… It happens… What I found more discouraging was how quiet the Mets bats were against a division rival they will need to beat if they expect to contend in the division. This Atlanta Braves team is clearly not the same team the Mets swept the last time they [...]

Mets Not Willing/Able To Spend

This week, I had a conversation with a source who is very close to a member of the Mets organization. This Mets source told him that the Mets will not be spending large amounts of money on any players any time soon. He cited Jason Bay as being the last of the big signings.  Citing the situation regarding the Madoff scandal which has been made public record for some time… The source that yes the Wilpon’s and Sterling Equities didn’t lose any money [...]
