Mailbag: Player Options and Prospects

Will the Mets pickup the options on Billy Wagner of J.J. Putz? I feel the Mets should not pick up either of their options unless within the final two months of the season they are able to prove that they have significant value with no signs of holding back because of their injuries. The barometer should be their pre-surgery velocity coupled with their command. If they rise to the occasion on both those levels, than [...]

Pagan’s Slam Rattles Snakes; Mets Win 9-6

It seems fitting that on Build-A-Bear Night at Citi Field, the Mets would come out of their two-game hibernation.  Their 12-hit attack on the Diamondbacks’ pitchers, capped by Angel Pagan’s eighth-inning grand slam, fueled the Mets to a 9-6 victory Saturday night over Arizona. Pagan picked a perfect time to hit the first home run of his Mets career, as his shot into the left field seats broke a 5-5 tie.  Angel had been one [...]

Padres Release Mark Prior

This isn’t a Mets-related story, but I think it’s worth mentioning. After attempting to make a comeback to the Bigs and suffering major setbacks in the Minor Leagues, the San Diego Padres will release Mark Prior at some point this weekend, according to MLB.com. He never played for the Mets, but he was one of the most promising and feared pitchers in the Bigs when healthy with the Cubbies from 2002-2005 (he went 1-6 in [...]

Mets Injury Update: Beltran Inching Closer To Return?

According to Steve Popper of the Bergen Record, Carlos Beltran took batting practice today on the field for about twenty minutes. Popper said that Beltran appeared to be “fine”. He reports that Beltran hit a ball hard enough to reach the Pepsi Porch, which is definitely encouraging. He even goes as far as saying that he was surprised that Beltran was not in the lineup tonight. Bart Hubbuch echoed a similar report, however he noticed [...]

Looking Back on Omar’s Last Deadline Deal

The 2009 trade deadline has come and gone and once again Omar Minaya has stood pat and held onto all of his players. It’s been three years since the last time the Mets made a big trade at the deadline. Turning back the clock, Omar Minaya woke up in a GM’s worst nightmare scenario. During the early morning hours of the trade deadline Minaya learned that his coveted setup man, Duaner Sanchez, had been seriously [...]

Phillies Making All The Right Moves

Keith Hernandez says it all the time. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other team, and in this case the other team is the Philadelphia Phillies. They made a brilliant off season move by replacing longtime Phillie and Mets nemesis Pat Burrell, with free agent outfielder Raul Ibanez who has been nothing short of spectacular. Ibanez has put together an MVP type season and leads the team in almost every offensive category [...]

Omar Minaya Is A Dead Man Walking

As the Mets lost the opener to Arizona 3-2, I couldn’t help but wonder what lies ahead for these Mets. We’re back to the same team that struggles to score runs, and the team that won five straight not so long ago, may have just been a blip on the radar. Omar Minaya says there was no help available that was better than the guys that are coming back. He said the one positive thing that [...]
