Zack Wheeler put forth another solid effort on Tuesday night in the Mets’ come from behind thriller of a victory over the New York Yankees at Citi Field. As the trade deadline looms, the right-hander gave competing teams a glimpse of what could be in their future come July 31.

Wheeler, 29, tossed 6.1 innings of quality work against one of the best offenses in the game today while allowing just two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out eight batters while taking the no-decision. Wheeler is beginning to get hot at the right time for an organization who needs to build his value.

Wheeler spoke again after the game of what is seemingly inevitable as we move closer to the end of July.

“I can’t tell you how many years my name’s been in trade talks, so I’m kind of used to it right now,” Wheeler said. “But it never gets easy. You try to just keep your mind where it’s at, and I think the past has sort of helped me say, ‘Whatever, it is what it is. I’m just going to go out there and pitch, and help this team.’” (MLB.com)

Over his last three starts, Wheeler has put forth an ERA of 1.86 as he has given up just four runs over 19.1 innings pitched. He tossed 116 pitches on Tuesday night, which was the fifth-most of his career and the second-most he has thrown this season.

Wheeler has shown solid control as of late, with giving up just two walks on Tuesday it was his 12th-straight start of allowing two walks or less, that is the longest streak of his career. Since April 23 he owns a 5.6 K/BB ratio and a 1.8 BB/9 ratio since that date.

Yankees manager, Aaron Boone spoke of Wheeler’s performance after Tuesday night’s Mets victory.

“He’s capable of that,” Boone said. “I thought his splitter-change was really effective, obviously the fastball. … He was good, he was filling up the strike zone. And we know he’s capable of that when he’s on his game.”

The Yankees are believed to be one of the team’s who will be in on Wheeler come the trade deadline and he gave them a look firsthand of what he could deliver, if acquired.

Wheeler’s record now sits at 6-5 on the season with a 4.42 ERA and a WHIP of 1.25. His FIP stands at 3.63 and has a WAR of 2.5. His days with the Metropolitans may be numbered as he continues to dazzle on the mound.
