While the Mets pitching has been mediocre at best, it’s performances like Zack Wheeler‘s start on Monday that the Mets are going to need going forward.
Wheeler, 26, has posted a 2-2 record with a 4.18 ERA in six starts for the Mets this season as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
Regardless, the Mets have lost five straight as they can’t form a cohesive bond to win ball games.
“I left a lot of pitches over the middle,” Wheeler said. “But luckily, they hit them right to guys.”
Wheeler will have to work out his kinks and will have his ups and downs this season, but Monday’s performance was one of his strongest of the year.
With all the injuries the Mets have accrued, it will be important for Wheeler to step up every fifth day and provide a quality start.
It’s been a team effort in the Mets recent string of losses, but with the entire pitching staff turning in mediocre outings, it’s a good sign when a pitcher goes out and tosses a quality game such as the one Wheeler did on Monday.
The Mets strength will come on their pitching core, so Wheeler’s outing is going in the right direction of what they will need going forward.
