The Mets’ bats were silent on Monday as the Amazin’s put up just three runs in their loss to Arizona.
After scoring early in the second inning, the Mets didn’t get on the scorecard again until the ninth when Wilmer Flores hit a two-run home run, but by then, it was too little too late.
With the Mets pitching staff putting up mediocre at best numbers, the offense has been their saving grace. However, Monday the Mets couldn’t thrust themselves over the seven runs the Diamondbacks put up.
“The issue is when you are in a losing streak and you are not playing well and you are getting knocked around pretty good,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.
“The sky’s falling, and it’s not. This is a game where every day, you have to forget about tonight. You got to get up tomorrow, get yourself ready and grind it out and put together good at-bats and put together a big pitch, make the big pitch when you have to make them. Don’t be afraid to walk a guy.”
In the eighth inning before the Diamondbacks busted the game wide open, Lucas Duda stepped to the plate with Neil Walker on base as the go-ahead run and the first baseman whiffed to keep it a then-scoreless game.
“Right now, somebody has pissed off the baseball gods because every move we make, it turns out to be the wrong one, no matter what it is,” Collins said.
And pissed off the baseball gods the Mets may have, as they’ve now hit a skid that has seen them drop five straight games.
The bullpen continues to falter and this time it was Hansel Robles who got lambasted as he coughed up two huge home runs and was wildly ineffective.
The Mets can’t get out of their own way right now and regardless of whether their offense is good or bad, they continue to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Their meager output Monday was just another sad turn to this Mets season.
