The New York Mets finally got to play some teams other than their National League East counterparts this past week, hosting the San Francisco Giants for three and taking on the Milwaukee Brewers for a three-game set on the road.

The team had a promising start to the week, taking two of three from the Giants for their fourth straight series win, and getting back to .500 and just 4.5 games back of the Washington Nationals after Tuesday’s victory.

Of course, a week without an injury to a Mets player wouldn’t fit their current mold, and so, closer Jeurys Familia was placed on the disabled list Friday after having surgery to remove an arterial blood clot in his right shoulder. The timetable for his return is three to four months.

The Mets were swept by the Brewers on the road over the weekend, being outscored 29-17. They finished the week with a 2-4 record and sit eight games back of the first place Nationals in the NL East. The team looks to rebound after dropping the first game against the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday night, with two more contests followed by hosting the Los Angeles Angels for three over the weekend.

As always, here are your MMO Players of the Week for May 8-14.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: NEIL WALKER

Neil Walker earns MMO’s Offensive Player of the Week after going 12-for-26 (.462), with three doubles, triple, two home runs, 10 RBI, two walks, and six runs scored.

After a tough start to the season, finishing April with a .583 OPS with just two home runs and 10 RBI, Walker has completely turned around his season in May, recording at least one hit in 11 of 13 May games. He also has six multi-hit games and a current seven-game hitting streak.

Walker played a pivotal role in Monday’s win against the Giants, doubling in the Mets first run of the game in the bottom of the first and sending the Mets home victorious with their first walk-off win of the season in the ninth.

With two on and two out in the inning, Walker singled on a 1-2 curveball off Hunter Strickland, scoring Michael Conforto who led off the inning with a walk. Before that at-bat, Walker had been 0-for-3 lifetime against the right-handed Strickland.

Walker also got the Mets on the board in their first game against Milwaukee, hitting Matt Garza‘s first pitch deep to right to cut the Brewers lead to 2-1. Walker would later tie the score in the sixth, lacing a single to right that scored Asdrubal Cabrera from third.

Walker is leading the Mets in doubles (11), is second in hits (36), and third in RBI (22).

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: JACOB deGROM

Jacob deGrom earns his third MMO Pitcher of the Week of the season, starting two games against the Giants and Brewers this week and keeping the Mets in the game in both.

deGrom pitched the first game of the Giants’ series, tossing six innings of three-run ball on four hits, with three walks and 11 strikeouts. It was his fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season, compared to six such games combined in 2015-16.

Two home runs were how the Giants scored their only runs off the right-hander, a two-run shot from Hunter Pence in the first, and a solo shot from Buster Posey in the sixth.

Far from a dominant performance on Sunday against the Brewers, deGrom did keep the Mets in the game, leaving with a runner on first and the Mets leading 8-3 in the seventh. A two-run home run from Jonathan Villar cut the Mets lead to 8-5, but still with deGrom set to earn his third win of the season.

However, the bullpen couldn’t contain the Brewers offense, allowing five runs in the eighth, and the eventual 11-9 Brewers win and three-game sweep.

deGrom is leading the National League in K/9 (12.39), and is second in the NL in strikeouts with 67. One thing that has plagued deGrom is his soaring pitch count in games. Among qualifying starters in baseball, deGrom’s 16.9 pitchers per inning is currently 75th, a career worst.
