In an injury update first reported by Tim Healey of Newsday, the Mets have decided not to bring injured outfielder Yoenis Cespedes for their road series in Miami.

The expectation going into today was that Cespedes, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hip flexor on May 16, would continue his recovery with the team, eventually ramping up the baseball activities while they were stationed two hours from Port St. Lucie.

However, this no longer seems to be the case, as the Mets ultimately feared that this would interrupt his rehab process. In a pre-game interview, manager Mickey Callaway told Matt Ehalt (The Record):

“We thought it would hinder his ability and his rehab to come here for a couple of days. Keep him there in Port St. Lucie and continue what he’s doing.”

Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Cespedes has yet to take things up any sort of notch above physical therapy, a clearly frustrating development (or lack thereof) in the slugger’s attempts to finally return to the lineup. Nonetheless, it’s probably best that the team exercise as much caution as possible in handling such a fragile situation.
