New York Mets center fielder Yoenis Cespedes gave everyone a scare during Friday night’s 8-6 win over the Atlanta Braves.
After a leadoff single in the seventh, Cespedes was picked off first base and twisted his ankle trying to get back to the bag. Cespedes remained huddled on the ground for a couple of minutes before trainer Ray Ramirez and manager Terry Collins helped him off the field.
It looked pretty gruesome on replay, but surprisingly Cespedes remained in the game and gingerly ran to center field at the bottom of the inning.
After the game, Cespedes told reporters that his ankle felt fine and that he had no intentions of leaving the game.
“It bothered me a little once I twisted it at first base, but I’m OK,” Cespedes said through an interpreter.
The Mets have already dodged a couple of bullets with regards to losing Cespedes to the disabled list this season. Tonight, it looks like they averted disaster again. Thankfully.
Overall this season, Cespedes is batting .288 with a .946 OPS, 12 doubles, 18 home runs and 44 RBI.
Cespedes, 30, is the third leading vote-getter among NL outfielders and currently holds a starting spot in the 2016 All Star Game.
