Following Friday’s report of the New York Mets and rehabilitating outfielder Yoenis Cespedes coming to an agreement on the 34-year-old’s 2020 salary restructuring, news emerged on Friday night regarding the financial details of the Cuban native’s grievance-based pay cut.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Cespedes — who was set to earn $29.5 million in the final year of the four-year, $110 million deal he signed ahead of the 2017 season — will earn “less than $10 million” in base salary with additional performance incentives bringing his potential 2020 salary to “roughly $20 million”.

RosterResource has Cespedes’ 2020 salary listed as $9.5 million, bringing the Mets’ luxury tax payroll estimate down to $195.5 million — $12.5 million below this season’s $208 million competitive balance tax.

The Associated Press reports that Cespedes was paid $14.8 million last season — half of his $29 million 2019 salary — due to the grievance filed by the Mets following the seven-year MLB veteran’s fall while rehabbing on his ranch last spring (double heel decalcification surgery), reportedly resulting in a major lower leg injury.

We’ll keep you posted with new information as it becomes available.
