Stephen Drew

The New York Yankees and Stephen Drew have agreed to a one year deal worth $5 million dollars according to reports by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports and David Lennon of Newsday. The deal is pending a physical.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports adds that Drew’s contract includes up to $1.5 million in incentive bonuses, which could bring the total value to $6.5 million.

The Mets were viewing the 32-year old Drew as a fall-back option hoping they could land him on a cheap one-year deal later this month as the Scott Boras client kept seeing his stock tumble.

It’s not clear where the Mets turn to now other than re-focusing their efforts on free agents Everth Cabrera, whom the Mets are not high on, or perhaps Japanese shortstop Takashi Toritani who may just stay in Japan.

They could still turn to the trade market, but much of that buzz died down weeks ago.

It really does appear that Wilmer Flores will be the Mets’ Opening Day shortstop.
